Chernobyl reactor active?

It is VERY viable. Just need to remove the stupid fucking restrictions on reprocessing and then build small, strategic power reactors of 1mw or less. Build a few dozen of them and you could energize the entire country and the savings in environmental impact alone would pay for it.

I was part of the Air Force that did studies on Chernobyl and its environmental impact through measurements of direct environmental sampling of that disaster.

Fukushima has been a non-issue if you pay attention to those who understand and not the hair-on-fire anti-nuclear nutjobs.

If we stopped doing things because of a few accidents, we'd all still be living in caves.
 
The dangers of another Chernobyl are actually quite small.

Many people don't realize that Chernobyl wouldn't have even happened if they were not conducting output testing on the reactor to see how much electricity it would continue to put out if it was shut down. The Soviets wanted to know how long they could expect power output to hospitals and other essential services in the event of a war and the reactor became a military target.

According to the official story, as taken from the US NRC is:

On April 26, 1986, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment.

What they don't say is that the reactor systems test was a war readiness test.

Regardless, they lost control of the reactor because of this test and that was the reason for the loss of Reactor Unit 4.

The accident at Chernobyl was unnecessary but it was NOT because nuclear power is dangerous.

 
As bad as Fukushima Daiichi was in 2011, Chernobyl makes that look like a joke. The entire northern hemisphere was bathed in alarming levels of radioactivity for a year after the incident. It was so bad, that the powers that be redacted all public access to the data from radiation monitoring sites for that time period. They used to have a good historical measurement database (with charts over time) available at the EPA RADNET site, but looking now, I don't see the same level of accuracy, history or accessibility as I've seen in years past. Looks like they've stopped publishing the data in recent months. Probably don't want to alarm the public.

Ok but disasters happen on a consistent enough basis...we can't stop them.

Everything from human error to natural disasters like hurricanes and tidal waves.

Name a single location that has access to consistent water (river) that hasn't had a disaster. (Hint: it doesn't exist)

That's the whole issue right there. From tornadoes to earthquakes...a nuke plant is a small disaster away from a huge one.
 
We're stuck with existing nuke plants...just like we're stuck with the radioactive spent fuel sitting in ponds all over the country.

But that is NOT a viable option going forward
That's just goofy. Sitting in ponds. Grow up!

We should be building dozens if not hundreds of nuclear power plants, just like the rest of the world.

engineering concepts and practices have come a long way and continue to improve. We cannot rob ourselves of a vital resource and a means by which we can provide 1st world power generation while at the same time, reducing polluting emissions by orders of magnitude.

Simply put, the chances of a widespread nuclear event is pretty damn minuscule. The returns are more than enough to justify the very small risk.
