Dogs very rarely "die peacefully" In most cases it's cancer or organ failure and rarely is it painless.

both my chihuahua died of old age 12 and 16 years old

Little dogs tend to live longer. We had to help send our 15 year old Miniature Pinscher over yesterday. It was time and it was a blessing for her. But it is still hard.
