Boko Haram: Nigeria regains border town after Chadian military assault

Boko Haram militants were forced to retreat from the town of Michika after Chad deployed airstrikes against them. The African Union said Friday that members should stand up a 7,500-member multinational military force to counter the

Chad's military used airpower and ground troops to force Boko Harammilitants out of a Nigerian border town on Thursday, the first such victory since Chad joined a regional campaign against the jihadist group.

A Nigerian soldier confirmed to the Associated Press that he had witnessed the recapture of Michika, on the Nigeria-Cameroon border. And President Goodluck Jonathan triumphantly claimed victory while on a campaign stop Thursday ahead Nigeria's Feb.14 election. He announced that more towns in the region would soon be liberated.

“We're totally committed to reclaiming our territories and Adamawa will be the first among the three states that we'll soon recover," he said

The military victory came a day before the Africa Union, which is holding a summit in Ethiopia's capital, urged Nigeria’s neighbors to contribute a 7,500-multinational force to fight Boko Haram, The Wall Street Journal reports

Who cares if Chad is corrupt, what 3rd world country isn't.? The point is they know how to fight and we need more armies like them. If they skew the body count good for them, maybe that will motivate other Muslim countries to quit dropping their rifles.

America has no leadership either in the Pentagon or the White House. And even if we did it would be logistically impossible to fight terrorist armies all over the world. "Good" Muslims need to fight for their own damn country.

Two things to note:

1.) After roughly 30 years of war Chad is likely has one of the most experienced militaries in the region for fighting this kind of battle, particularly with the support they have received from France.

2.) While it is great that Boko Haram is being given a black eye, and while I hope they continue to be damaged, it is worth noting that it is likely that most of those who died were conscripts captured by Boko Haram and made to fight against their will. That's how Shekau's faction operates, much like the LRA in the Dr Congo, and Central African Republic.

Boko Haram members sentenced to death in Chad
Aug. 29, 2015 -- Following a three-day trial, Chad sentenced ten members of the Islamic militant group Boko Haram to death on Friday.
The ten individuals were convicted of participating in two attacks on Chad's capital of N'Djamena during the summer. On June 15, militants destroyed a school and a police buildings while killing 38 individuals and wounding more than a hundred others. A July attack took 15 lives. Prosecutor Bruno Mahouli said the men were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, killing, destruction with explosives, fraud, illegal possession of guns and the use of psychotropic substances.

Among the convicted are Mahamat Mustapha, also known as Bana Fanaye, who is considered the leader of the attacks. The trial was held behind closed doors. Originally scheduled to last eight days, it was expedited due to security reasons. The attack marked the first of its kind by the group. Chad is where the headquarters of a regional force combating Boko Haram is located. The country has also been of help to Nigeria in reclaiming territory taken by the group.

The sentence follows the reinstating of the death penalty for acts of terror in Chad. Civil rights groups have opposed this change, arguing that it could encroach on civil rights. Boko Haram is composed of jihadists who seek to create their own Islamic caliphate in Nigeria. They have murdered thousands of people and forced millions to leave their homes in northeast Nigeria since 2009.
