I'm of two minds in that matter.
Most of the time they are pretty useful but sometimes you just want your peace and quite and everyone just spams you. And if you switch it off at least someone will ask you later if everything is alright or panic if something happened. Its getting harder to just switch off, at some stage it won't be possible anymore.
