Casinos in America

I cannot believe that economists are not talking about this...
Where is our leadership?:

Every casino that gets built pulls many millions per year out
of our local economy. I am not a problem gambler. I have played slots, became very irritated, and STOPPED.
But, along the way I noticed something more important that made my visits worth the minimal loss I had . . .
gambling/casino visits are pulling money straight out of our productive economy!
Go to the casino. Sit down at a slot machine. Look to your left and to your right . . . look behind you.

There you will see people betting their life away.

You may see a person with a rip in their coat,
but betting 1, 2, or 3 dollars every push of the button.
That person will not go to the local store and buy a coat!
That person will not visit the local supermarket or have his/her car repaired.

Look at the situation people - their are millions of people NOT SPENDING THEIR MONEY IN THE ECONOMY and
"economists" cannot see why? Also, if this person bought the coat, groceries, and car repairs,
someone will have a job - a job that pays more than $8-9 dollars an hour to push in chairs, empty ashtrays,
or clean-up slop. They will have a job making coats!
They will have a job distributing foods/goods. The economy will pick up.

Why have a casino that takes in 900 Million per year (central New York), pays out less that 10 million per year,
has a payroll of 100 million per year to keep their workers poor, and hides the rest,
not paying anything to New York (or your state), while the economy plummits?

Washington says in it's quarterly reports that consumer confidence is down.
People are not buying goods and services. Well, wake up! They are blowing the little money they have in casinos.
Not just a few people are doing this . . . GO THERE AND LOOK AROUND.
Stay for a few hours and observe.

Then Washington invites "Casino Leaders" to come in and explain how they
created "jobs" in a rural area. Those are not "Jobs". Their is nothing productive happening there!

We are losing our way with these casinos and people are blind to see it
You "leaders" who are pretending to be "blind" to the affliction on society are not fooling anyone,
and we are coming at you now, full force, starting with me. We are going to shut you down, you can be sure of this.
We will rebuild and fix our society so that people are HAPPY. We will see a consumer spending rate that is phenominal and
unmatched by any era. America will be proud again.

Casinos are a losing proposition when state after state elects to make them legal.

They are a boon only when they are rare and can draw suckers from all over the land.

That being said I think that they ought to be legal, anyway.

Casinos are profitable because they are fun and because they are addictive. However, that person with a rip in his coat won't be going to buy a new coat either if he is addicted to illegal drugs on the street or chooses to take a cruise somewhere or do day trading with penny stocks or give all he has to some worldwide wacko environmental scam or sends his life savings to that person in Brazil (or Columbia or Nicaragua or wherever) who will then be able to transfer a fortune to the lucky beneficiary. (I got one of those offers just this morning.)

So we either outlaw gambling (which I think most of us would oppose on general principle) and thereby make casinos illegal, or we accept it as a vice the people want to have. It goes against all American concepts of freedom to base what is 'legal' on whether it adds money to the government treasury.

The best way to make any ugly vice mostly go away is to make it socially unacceptable. There will always be a few who won't give a damn, but most people don't want to look weak or look like schmucks or be considered stupid or irresponsible by their peers. Peer pressure is the only truly effective method to effect social change.

Gambling pays a lot of police salaries, but indeed, it leaves people with the affliction of addiction in some pretty bad financial states.

When we go visit the kid in Las Vegas who's a cop, all I take into a Casino is $20. When that's gone, we go home. One out of 5 times, I took home $75. So with 4x20= -$80 and the $75 win, I lost $5. in 5 evenings out over 5 years for $5.00 (didn't plan it that way). Worst case scenario would be to lose $100./5.

I'm sorry so many people can't stop. But I don't miss the stifling cigarette smoke in Casinos. It's thick.

Gambling is a vice no more or less than any other

The bigger Q is, just how much leverage are people willing to grant state and federal entities to foist vice based enterprises upon them

I view them much like wall st, in that they don't create or produce anything viable

so to add them into our GDP is , imho, just as disingenous as adding in brothel profits

...the Illinois General Assembly authorized a plan Tuesday for a casino in Chicago, two in the suburbs and slot machines at O'Hare and Midway airports.

Casinos may give away money such as the ones in Las Vegas like Station Casinos to The county school district.
And Station Casinos always have a project going (from what i last checked), so the means construction jobs.....


Ever noticed how rates are low for the things in Casinos and yet their staff has stable jobs? Thats the money they get from Gambling.





But yes, they do have their effect on the economy.
