Can leg cramps cause permanent damage?

Proper hydration is the key. Also, if you have a physically taxing job, in addition to water and the excellent suggestions on the sources of potassium, drink things like Gatorade or Powerade.
I find that when I work for a long time, not just water will do the trick.

Gramps is ACTIVE all day long.... So it is not the lack of activity.... my bet, is dehydration caused his cramp, or lack of potassium....potassium is needed for normal nerve function...which controls muscles.

Does Gramps take medicine for high blood pressure? When I was prescribed lisinipro, I had leg cramps bad until my body adjusted. I still have to make sure I get enough water and potassium.
Lisinipro lisinipril is deadly. I took it for years. Then I started having severe muscle spasms in my throat. I got muscle relaxer shots at the hospital. I was sent to a raft of specialists to find out what was causing the spasms. One old doctor said it was a KNOWN side-effect of lisinipril. If you suddenly cannot swallow that's what it is.

I get them if I don't have enough potassium or if I am low on magnesium, C or even calcium. Potassium an salt go hand in hand. The body cannot process the potassium if it doesn't have enough salt. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Magnesium works in sync together too. So make sure you are up on B's too. Calcium, C and D'3 (or plenty of sunshine) all work in sync. Low on iodine can also cause cramps. And of course make sure you get enough liquids through the day which is hard to do sometimes.

Some good tips. I don't take any medication and have been luckily healthy my whole life. I will look into potassium supplements and electrolytes. Not big on the Gatorade style drinks but may start drinking them.

I typically get a 32oz unsweetened tea before work and another at lunch. Occasionally a third with dinner. And that's about it usually.

I have read that it has some serious side effects. I have been talking it for 20+ years and doing fine. It is the only BP med that doesn't make me feel draggy.

Mineral water and possibly fruit juices may help give needed minerals and help hydrate you during the day. My hair gets more grey every time I am lacking in B's. I have very long hair and some of it still turns back dark brown at the roots when I start taking B's again. Just about all of the water supply is tainted with glyphosate too and that will chelate minerals from one just like it does the plants they put it on. Another thing is as we age our intestines do not absorb nutrients as well.

As long as you know.

I always jump up on my feet the second I notice cramping in my leg while in bed. Walking on it always eliminates the cramp, at least for me.

Yes, that is what I do.

I feel the OP's pain.

Occasionally, I wake up with excruciating pain. It is so bad that I imagine that I will never survive it. (For me, those moments usually occur after I have walked for, say, 3 miles that day.)

I find that if I am able to walk around the house for a few minutes, it diminishes in pain.

I also once read that if the cramps are not too severe, it helps to sit up on your bed and curl the toes toward you. You might get some relief.

And, I hear, there are over-the-counter medicines that supposedly help. I have never used them so far.

And, oh yes, they say to avoid letting heavy blankets lie on your feet.

Dehydrated, drink a lot of water with a banana or orange or tomato juice....for the potassium you may be lacking as well!

But the headache is a sign that it is dehydration causing the cramp.

Yes! I've had less than a handful in my life, and it is the WORST PAIN EVER!
Banana ? Watching dr Oz again eh ?

Last night I had the worst cramp in human history lol
I'm not even kidding. It lasted what felt like forever but it was about 4 or 5 minutes.
I was wearing shorts and felt something funny, looked down and it looked like something the size of a gerbil was crawling up my leg under my skin. At that point I knew what was coming and braced for the pain. Holy hell it was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt and it looked even worse.
It was so bad that I'm am near horse this morning and have a migraine. Possibly coincidence I suppose but what a miserable 12 hours this has been.
Can't put much weight on my leg this morning without more pain.

Get some of this stuff,it works.

I let my feet stick out from the blankets. lol Because I find it more comfortable. And, I fold my blanket up into 4 layers so it's too short for my feet.

Also, I stick my sweatpants into my socks, or the sweatpants roll up on my leg during the night, and I know that unevenness makes me more likely to get a cramp, but I really don't like the pants up my leg. I never could find a solution for that.

Welcome to old age......The cramps won't kill just the reason why you have cramps-gramps.

It doesn't for me but that is because I have a special reason for my cramps.

Being naked helps.

The headache came this morning. I figured it was a result of the yelling I was doing.
And the gallon of booze...

You may have the signs of spinal stenosis or spinal lamina...Nerves being pinched by yer disks of da spine....causing leg cramps...

Being naked helps.

My wife goes to bed 3 or 4 hours after me then she opens the sliding glass door nearby almost a couple of feet and turns off the heat. Otherwise, I don't sleep nearly as well. If I was naked I would freeze!
