That justification is easy. Cigarettes, for instance. Cigarettes foul the air of the bleeding heart liberals who want to run the world and control the lives of everyone who they consider to be less enlightened than they which is, well, everyone.

It is an abundantly well proven fact that if anything is taxed excessively, less of it will be produced because less of it will be consumed.

It for this same reason that any success is taxed heavily. The only success that is not unclean is success of the government. Success of wit or labor is not to be unpunished. Therefore any reward due a person that rises from his labor, his creativity, his inspiration or his persistance is to be at least partially stolen and used in ways he does not direct and cannot control.

The goal of taxing cigarettes is to eliminate them from society. What is the goal of other taxation?

So it's basically economic warfare against the People by a State that can't provide a valid reason to outlaw something but still wants to restrict the liberty of men for reasons they can't articulate intelligently?

Taxation of certain products more than others is just another way of controlling people's lives. Taxation doesn't always work - like with cigarettes. Higher booze taxes doesn't stop people from drinking. These kinds of taxes just make it harder.

People are still going to get their kids soft drinks, all kinds of sugary stuff, McDonald's, Burger King, etc. It's not going to do all that much to reduce obesity. It's convenient. Just like prepared frozen dinners. They're convenient, not necessarily good for you. And, God knows, it seems like the art of cooking has pretty much gone by the wayside to accommodate great careers, too little time, too little patience, etc.

Governments need money. They justify taxes on unhealthy products as doing us a favor, but the reality is the cost of the goods is so very low, and the price folks are willing to pay is so very high, there is a huge place there for the government to put their and in and grab.

I read that the cost for alcohol is about 5% of the price of a bottle. Manufacturers markup is another 5%, and the remaining 90% is all tax.
