The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll just out, shows that by a 2-1 margin the public wants Congress to have the final say on when our forces are withdrawn from Iraq.

Most Americans see President Bush as intransigent on Iraq and prefer that the Democratic-controlled Congress make decisions over a possible withdrawal of U.S. forces, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

how oh how will they spin this one?

I cant wait to see?

Hmmm, something wrong here, I mean it couldn't be spin on some of the numbers?

Even among those Americans who said they had served or had a close friend or relative who served in Iraq, 38 percent approve of Bush's handling of the conflict.

At the same time, Congress fares little better with the public on the war. Just 35 percent said they approve of the way congressional Democrats are handling the situation in Iraq, with 63 percent disapproving. Two-thirds of independents give the Democrats negative marks on the war.

Because they want results which the Rs are blocking at every turn.

They say things to make it look like they might support drawdowns and timelines but then vote to obstruct or flat out against them.

Same old song and dance they have done about every important issue for years now.

Seems the opposite to me.

Take the immigration issue.

they whine and flail their hands and in the end fight any logical answer.

Take balenced budgets.

they whine and fail and then increase the deficit when thye get the chance.

Take health care.

They whine and scream and then call names and lie about any attempt to do anything.

It goes on and on and on.

You left this part out:

"As the president and Congress spar over war policy, both receive negative marks from the public for their handling of the situation in Iraq. But by a large margin, Americans trust Democrats rather than the president to find a solution to a conflict that remains enormously unpopular. And more than six in 10 in the new poll said Congress should have the final say on when to bring the troops home."

But, if you want to think american trust Bush more, to get us out of Iraq, by all means believe that.

So where are those 'large numbers? Missing in action...

"But when it comes to judging the president versus congressional Democrats on the issue of Iraq, the public stands with Congress. Fifty-five percent said they trust congressional Democrats on the war, compared with 32 percent who said they trust Bush. (Eleven percent of all respondents and 17 percent of independents said they trust "neither.") And by 2 to 1, Americans said Congress, rather than the president, should make the final decision about when to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq. Nearly three in 10 Republicans side with Congress over the president on this question."
.

Hardly large numbers, not to mention the inconsistencies with answers on other questions. Seems the numbers follow the MSM headlines, though the people when given more information, intrinsically sense there are problems with the pablum.

So what do Americans on the ground in Iraq think? You know, the people actually dealing with the situation. Who should we trust on the issue of Iraq? Harry Reid or David Petraeus?

U.S. Military Drafts Plan to Keep Troops in Iraq Until Mid-2009

The U.S. military command in Iraq has drafted a plan that envisions U.S. troops staying in the country for another two years, The New York Times reported July 24.

The strategy document calls for restoring security in Baghdad and other local areas by the summer of 2008 and for "sustainable security" to be achieved across Iraq by the summer of 2009, the newspaper wrote, citing unnamed U.S. officials.

The plan builds on the "surge" strategy set out by President George W. Bush in January when he deployed additional U.S. combat troops to Iraq.

The blueprint was developed by U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. troops in Iraq, and the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and has been presented to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the newspaper said.

The strategy, entitled "Joint Campaign Plan," comes as lawmakers in Congress have pushed for a timetable to start withdrawing U.S. troops and pronounced Bush’s surge policy a failure.

A withdraw would take take one year if you started right now, so that is out of the question before 09. But we can take brigades out slowly over the course of the next two years while still protecting green zones, and re-deploy some troops to darfur to end genocide. The UN is doing nothing, and if Bush wants to take it upon himself to create a global police nation, well he would be open to at least re-deploying troops to darfur.

That is what I'm reading, from those 'on the ground.' Not from Bush & Co. The surge is working, so how do they get the Iraqis to pick up on it? That is what the 'on the gound' are working on. They'll be undermined by politicos, if history replays.

Politicians in Congress are not interested in doing the right thing for Iraq and its Constitution for which Americans and Iraqis have paid such a high price. Politicians from the Left could care less about the 12 million Iraqis who voted for representative government. They are only interested in securing power in Washington by doing those things the polls and the MSM tell them will lead to their re-election.
