This was in 1972, before he went crazy, the arrogance of being the best in the world is not hidden, he is quite forthcoming in his belief, and he is correct about it. He displays his brilliance in a way that is obvious during this interview. I have always looked at Johnny Carson as also being brilliant and the best on the world at hosting a late night talk show, and there will never be another Johnny Carson. The end of Fischer's life is a sad tale, paranoid and reclusive in Iceland, but here he seems quite normal.

It is sad how his mental health went down ward. All of us kids back when he faced Spassky were focused on those matches and admired him greatly. If Chess is considered a sport then he was a great sports star. ( made a mistake on the name before)

It's actually rather common with chess masters. Capoblanca was famous for always sleeping in a four post bed with a pawn on each post.

Pasternak?
Boris Spassky , Russian Chess master. It was a series of matches between the two during the Cold War. The stress on those two must have been heavy.

Have you seen "The Queen's Gambit"?

The Russians were the undisputed champions in the chess world for decades.
Then along came a brash young American who took them all to task and became #1
This all happened during the cold war between the USA and Russia.
Transporting chess from an obscure board game to a political match between the two superpowers on the world stage.
It was an exciting time. ...

Partially because they cheated.

Chess was invented many centuries ago in Europe and is a popular national sport in most of the European countries.
The top chess Grand Masters are treated like rock stars by the public. ...

There is a piano comparison, in Van Clyburn. Young Texan outplays Russia's best, playing some of the greatest Russian compositions.

I have heard the name also there is a young gentleman In an African country that is getting a lot of attention in the Chess world.
