I think most Democrats are well intentioned and want to help people. So are most Republicans. The disagreement is how government can be utilized to do it.

There are many that believe it was Leon Panetta that ordered the hit on Osama Bin Laden.

For the more dedicated "true believer" liberals, this "challenge" is easy. They very much BELIEVE that "we" (alluding to our nation or her people), although imperfect, are capable of goodness and even greatness. For MOST of them (I am guessing a little bit, but I think I'm on the mark here): the goal of modern American liberalism is the fulfillment of some idealized notion of our loftier Founding principles -- especially the desire for Equality and Freedom.
