Democrats are losing their religion on universal masking — just not at the White House.

Across the country, top Democratic officials are relaxing mask mandates as Omicron recedes and concern rises about how masking is affecting schoolchildren. Meanwhile, Republicans have seized on the issue to attack Democrats as mask fundamentalists.

The shift among Democrats accelerated Monday, when a bipartisan group of governors meeting with President JOE BIDEN in Washington told him they wanted a “return to a greater state of normality” and to “move beyond the pandemic.”

A parade of Democratic governors in charge of some of the bluest states — including New Jersey Gov. PHIL MURPHY, Delaware Gov. JOHN CARNEY, Connecticut Gov. NED LAMONT, Oregon Gov. KATE BROWN and California Gov. GAVIN NEWSOM — quickly announced the lifting of mask restrictions. New York Gov. KATHY HOCHUL will reportedly do so today, as will Illinois Gov. J.B. PRITZKER.

In California, Newsom lifted the indoor mask mandate, though, as our Jeremy White and his colleagues note in California Playbook, “America’s most populous state continues to embrace a stringent set of rules, including dictating that kids must cover their faces in the classroom.”

Masks are no longer required in the city of Lynn after Mayor Jared Nicholson rescinded the mandate Wednesday, he announced in a post on Twitter.

Lynn joins other cities and towns across the state that are changing policies as COVID-19 cases decline. Nicholson’s announcement came the same day that Governor Charlie Baker announced that the statewide mask mandate for K-12 schools will be dropped Feb. 28.

The mandate in Lynn went into effect Dec. 20 via an executive order by former Mayor Thomas McGee and required face coverings in all indoor spaces in the city.

Rhode Island will lift its mask or proof-of-vaccination requirement for indoor businesses Friday, and plans on ending the statewide school mask mandate early next month, Governor Dan McKee said Wednesday. The decision made in consultation with public health officials comes as key metrics used to measure the spread of the coronavirus, including new cases, percent positive rates, and hospitalizations continue to drop since the peak of the Omicron surge, the Democratic governor said at a news conference.

Governor Daniel McKee will announce Wednesday afternoon that the state’s requirement for masking or providing proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests for indoor public places and large venues will expire on Friday.

The governor will lift the statewide masking requirement in schools and state offices on March 4.

The details of the governor’s announcement at 1:30 p.m. were released to municipal leaders.

The U.S. is heading out of the “full-blown-pandemic phase” of COVID-19 and moving toward a point where more decisions will be made at the local level and not by the federal government, allowing restrictions such as wearing face masks to be lifted over time.

That’s according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, in an interview with the Financial Times.

In his most upbeat remarks on the state of the crisis, Fauci said he hoped restrictions would be ended in the coming months as a combination of vaccines, treatments including antivirals and prior infection would make the virus more manageable.
