Blast at China Market Said to Injure 33
ASSOCIATED PRESS
BEIJING (AP) - An explosion at a market in China's southwest injured 33 people, the government's Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.
Authorities suspect the blast was intentional, the agency said, but a police official reached by telephone refused to speculate on the possible motive.
The blast, at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the city of Guiyang, "was caused by a powerful explosion device put under the awarding platform of the market, which split many steel bars into pieces," Xinhua said, citing local sources.
Among the 33 people who were injured, four of them were hurt seriously and hospitalized, the report said.
Guiyang is about 1,110 miles southwest of Beijing.
