"The kids who are learning history in our schools are not being told the truth about they way the West was," says Austin.

"I bet you nine out of 10 people in this country think that cowboys were all white - as I did."

In the real Old West, as opposed to the film depiction, black cowboys were a common sight.

This is what happens when large sections of history are left out of the textbooks by racists

There were a lot of wetback cowboys too. They wore the black hats. :lmao:

Anyway, it is the glorification of the white criminal...Billy the Kid et al. All murderers that whites have romanticized.

The western US had more freedoms for the blacks, prostitution was legal, drugs were legal, weed was legal.....until the damn white moralist got a hold of it...

Billy killed for a different reason, he was fighting the cattle barons that were killing of driving off the local ranchers.. Thus making him a legend for fighting corruption...

In his case it was vigilantism for the man who sent the sheriff to kill his boss, and that Billy loved and respected because he took Billy in a gave him a trade. When his boss was killed he vowed to kill all involved....Sure he was a killer....It was the wild west as they say...

Oakland, California, has an annual parade and celebration commemorating the black cowboy's place in American history. Sad that people like Nutz are too clueless to realize the significance of such history...or its existence at all.

Down the road from me apiece is Ft. Garland, Colorado, one of the first US Army cavalry outposts in the Old West, dating back to the late 1840's, home not only to famous scout Kit Carson, but also to the first troop of African-American "Buffalo Soldiers" ever sent west of the Mississippi. Their job wasn't an enviable one -they were charged with keeping the territory safe from the Apache and Commanche.

Many of the 40,000 black Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War fighting the democrats who enslaved them, were cowboys who'd cut their teeth in the Midwest free states. After the war there was no shortage of black outlaws as well. No big deal. Like pretty much everything else in American history, blacks were part of the blueprint.
