Joseph, 24, is director of development for the Hagar School, the country’s newest bilingual school, which is in Beer Sheva in southern Israel.

“Although Israel is a bilingual state, very few Jews speak Arabic … and it’s not a good thing,” said Joseph, who is fluent in Hebrew and is learning Arabic.

“If you hear someone speaking a language that you don’t understand and it’s a language associated with people who don’t like you, you think the worst. The person may be asking for directions, but you think he is going to harm you.”

Just as important as learning the other person’s language is learning about his or her traditions, religion and culture.

There's something to be said for people needing to speak the same language in order to communicate.

You may WISH the language is English, and if you want to succeed in life in this country you better speak good standard English, but a substantial portion of our country has long had two languages - historically evident from place names, cuisine, and culture and pretending it doesn't exist won't make it disappear. Same with Israel. You can pretend to make everyone speak hebrew (which, by the way, was a resurrected dead language spoken by none of the native inhabitants) or you can accept reality and do what is best for ALL of your citizens to create a safer and better environment.

This is an interesting example of one of the VERY FEW countries outside the USA that must seriously deal with multiculturalism and like the USA, sees bilingual education as as something that will benefit the country.

your point about hebrew is mostly valid --- it wasn't exactly dead, but it certainly was not used much in conversation --- yiddish was more commonly used for that by the european jews.

it is interesting to note that the ancient tongue was not adequate for twentieth century speech and had to have a lot of words added --- mostly hebrew-ized english technical terms.
