The Duke comes out of the 19th century for the first time and plays a HUAC investigator checking on Communist infiltration in Hawaii. Also starring is James Arness (gunsmoke) as his partner. Believe it or not Hollywood portrays HUAC investigators as the heroes and communists as slimy nazi types. Good entertainment even if you root for the commies.

The Duke at his best in a modern day scenario. His subsequent endeavors at modern police dramas like McQ were kind of lame in my opinion.

The movie was produced by ultra-conservatives in Hollywood with the full cooperation of the House Unamerican Activities Committee. The production includes a strange mix HUAC supporters and those seeking to prove themselves anti-communists. It was not one of John Wayne's better movies. He of course played John Wayne as he did in all of his movies. The story is fairly good but it reeks of propaganda. The movies interesting for historical reason but that's about it. For good Wayne movies watch any of John Ford's movies with Wayne.

"Ultra conservatives in Hollywood"? In less than a decade those "ultra conservatives" would be blaming a republican senator for the unfortunate way communists were treated. The truth is that H'wood was out to make money and they thought Truman's HUAC was the way to use the Duke's popularity.

The studio heads in early the 50's were scared shitless by the HUAC. They gave them a few movies like this one, hopping to appease the committee.. However, Hollywood's problem soon vanished when McCarthy made a fool of himself on national television. McCarthy's image of a great communist fighter became that of a bully that that used innuendo and slander to destroy lives. He lost support of the Senate and the era of anti-communist mania ended.
