Too bad it's just a political grandstanding ploy to satiate his constituents. The finding will be that a permanent ban on drilling would require congressional approval and keeping the companies that hold the leases whole. So it really won't accomplish anything more than pulling the wool over the eyes of his constituents. Too bad for the American families that will be negatively affected by this action.

So, you are going back to getting your oil from Saudi Arabia, Russia and other enemies of America?

Sleepy Joe wants America at the mercy of Venezuela, Iran, and other states which may or may not become hostile in the future.

The Trump theorem of energy self-sufficiency promised to make a lot of America's wars of the future unnecessary and someone's problem.

Biden and the War Hawks couldn't stand that, even though Biden refused to fight when he was of draft age.

Why would we? We have a surplus, without having to do any of that drilling, and other forms of energy right now are more economical.

It's going to come from somewhere.

I would be shocked if it changed anything other than getting some folks laid off until the restart.

And of course making his constituents feel like something was done for a problem we don't have that wouldn't solve it if we did.

What families, this ban is on issuing anymore permits those already issued can still be used..

Basically this is just him looking for cover on his campaign promise. He can say I tried to ban drilling on federal lands but the evil congress said that required their approval and won't give it to me so I did everything I could.

How do I know? Because he could have said it was a permanent ban but didn't.

Sleepy Joe has also cut down on some of America's sources of oil, in the ANWR, the Keystone Pipeline, fracking on federal lands, etc. Sure, we may have a surplus now, but that's no guarantee. Further, surpluses can be sold abroad to both our friends and foes, undercutting the market for Iran and Venezuela and other suspect terror states.

Sure. So the big shale oil producers have a backlog of permits. The small companies don't. And deepwater doesn't work that way. So the Gulf Coast and small shale oil producers will be disproportionately affected all so that he can say he met his campaign promise that he knew he could not actually accomplish. It's pretty fucked up.

Families of service companies mainly. They don't have deep pockets. They will furlough their employees. It's already happened before back in 2010.

But there will be a trickle down affect on all businesses in the region.

There's been little interest in ANWR in the current energy economy. Why should we sell surpluses? Makes more sense to keep it underground until and IF we ever need it. Given the expansion of other energy sources that are less costly, we may never need to drill there, so why rush it ruin a pristine wilderness?

What they have while the price is low is capped wells that are no producing until the price increases. Those that frack managed to obtain energy independence without the use of public land permits.

With the current low oil prices and the turn towards natural gas - furloughs have already been happening in the energy sector. This one thing is not going to have much impact on that.

Rolling back ANWR is no big deal. Putting Americans out of work along the Gulf coast to solve a problem that doesn't exist and wouldn't solve it if it did exist is. Especially since this is just being done for optics.

Yes, but that was driven by market and covid. Not a political grandstand. The former was unavoidable. The latter isn't.

If you have ever worked in the petroleum industry you know it is a feast or famine type of operation it depends on the price of crude. Right now there is an oil glut and that will lay folks off also, not a lack of more permits for exploration.

You are talking about shale oil. Not deepwater. They are two totally different beasts.
