Last week I found this Web site where you could download free music - or so I thought. The name of the site is "Bear Share," perhaps you have heard of it? It is one of those p2p music sharing sites patterned after the original Napster site. I located and down loaded an album I was after. Well, I didn't really download it, I guess. What I did was make it available on my computer so I could play it from their Web site. Frankly, I am not totally sure of what I did - but of this, I am sure:

After listening to the music and going to a few more Web sites for other purposes, I closed my browser. The next time I opened it (I'll bet some of you already know what is coming), my Google home page was gone, and I was looking at a Bear Share home page. No problem, I thought - this has happened before. I quickly navigated to Google and then went to Tools/Options and clicked on "Make the current page my home page." All fixed, right? WRONG! Next time I activarted my browser, there it was again: Bear Share home page.

I was a victim of the dreaded home page hijack! Ever have that happen to you? It happened to me once before, about six years ago and I still remember what I had to go through to get my home page back. It involved downloading three or four programs, registering at a malware message board where dedicated people pulled me through it and venturing into the registry to do things I knew nothing about. Very scary stuff.

Well - guess what? I fixed the problem myself! Without having to do all that again. The fix was relatively easy and did not take that much time - although it took a bit of time, about half an hour. My browser is Firefox. The fix did not require me to go into the registry. It did not require doing anything with add ons nor anything else involving Firefox settings.

Can anyone guess what the fix was?

p.s. - NEVER go anywhere near the "Bear Share" site. Avoid it like the plague.

Never go to P2P sites. they are all malware hells.

The worst I ever experienced was limewire. I missed out because Apple did something so they couldn't do a dump on my computer like they wanted.

I guess so. But why is that? I have heard that the malware is not put in there by the site hosts, but by others on the outside who want to mess up the p2p sites for some reason, probably because they feel they violate copyright laws. Anything to that?

Bear share?

2002 called it wants its malware back

Oh, yeah? Well . . . the ocean called and it wants its shrimp back. No, No, I mean . . . the jerk store called and THEY want their shrimp back! No . . . . that's not it . . . . just a minute.

I guess I visited a notorious malware site, eh? Well, live and learn.

What you probably have going on in your conputer is way worse than just a homepage hijack.

Think about it.

Do you really think they're going to go though all that trouble JUST to change your search engine and homepage?

Seek professional help, man.

They own your computer right now.

You deleted the corrupted file folder "system32"? Just kidding, don't ever do that!

You simply removed the offending program?

Bear Share is an old one.
If you are ok with them storing absolutely everything you do on the internet and selling that information to anyone who wants it - then you should be not be upset when your computer fills up with crap.
Otherwise - avoid them and all P2P software.

I restored my computer to one day before I ever visited the Bear Share site. Worked like a charm.

After I did that, I got a response from a techhie at Bear Share, who gave me the name of the file to delete so they would stop hijacking my home page. (Prior to restoring my computer, I had been in email correspondence with Bear Share, asking for help in getting rid of the problem.) Of course, the file had a name which made no reference to Bear Share, so it would have been (and was) impossible to find to uninstall.

No, they don't. See my post just above this one.

I was going to guess that you used a restore point.
(really)

I use Kick Ass Torrents or isohunt for my downloads.

At the bottom of every torrent there is a Hash Tracker Number
Copy that Hash and Google Search it for all the info on it. That'll help you determine it's validity.
