Barack Obama will ride into the White House on the winds of change blown by Americans who were inspired by his almost mesmerizing speeches, manner, and aura of being someone new and special. When his message of change slid sharply to the right, his supporters closed ranks and matter-of-factly dismissed those who questioned his aburpt rightward turn with "He's only saying what he has to say to get elected." They danced to the beat of his song and nobody danced harder than African-Americans and the antiwar left.

Now that he has been elected, it's becoming increasingly apparent that they were right, he was only saying what he had to say to get elected, and now elected, he shifts even further to the right. He got off the horse that rode him to victory and has saddled up a horse of a different color. What America gets in Obama is the same corporate horse, just a different color.

It appears that the Obama Administration is shaping up to be even less diverse than the Bush Administration, and it includes some eye-raising choices. Out of the nearly all-white male selections on the menu, Larry Summers and Rahm Emanuel stand out.

Larry Summers, who appears to be at the top of Obama's list for Treasury Secretary, served as Bill Clinton's Treasury Secretary. After leaving that post, he took over as President of Harvard University. His most notable accomplishment during his time at Harvard was the firestorm he created with the African-American Studies Department. That firestorm of his own creation led to Summer's resigning from Harvard after a "no confidence" vote from the faculty and ever-increasing demands from within and outside of the university for him to step down. From the day he took over, Summers had the clear agenda of moving the political atmosphere of the university to the right and he aligned himself with the policies of the Bush Administration. He forced African-American Studies professor Cornel West out of Harvard and into Princeton and belittled the significance and importance of African-American study.

Summers also said that protests against Israel's occupation of Palestine and attempts to divest holdings in Israel by Harvard and other universities and institutions were "anti-semitic." He also wanted the reintroduction of the ROTC program at the university.

Summers was also once the chief economist for the World Bank were he implemented structural adjustments programs that were devastating to the people of Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere. While there, he also drafted a memo that called for "free market toxics" and he wrote that the World Bank should get behind sending toxic waste and industries that create these life-threatening wastes to these same "less developed countries." He said, “Health impairing pollution should be done in the country with the lowest cost, which will be the country with the lowest wages”, and that these people don't live long anyway. Again, widespread outrage ensued and calls for his resignation.

Bill Clinton found that when he tried to install him as head of his Council of Economic Advisors, he was forced to withdraw the nomination because of widespread protests .. so Clinton slid him in at Treasury. While he was the head of Treasury during the Clinton Administration, his feet were firmly planted towards the interests of corporations and financial institutions.

Why is such a man even considered for a top position in an administration that branded itself on change?

A decision that has already been made is yet another Clintonite from the republican wing of the Democratic Party, Rahm Emanuel, who was selected to be Obama's Chief of Staff. Emanuel is an Israeli hardliner and the son of an Israeli terrorist. He's a cursing, swearing blue dog democrat who probably will be the guy who keeps the hapless lemming-like left from making too much noise as Obama embarks on a foreign policy that is sometimes to the right of Bush. Pakistan is that example, and Obama continues to beat the drums of war towards Iran even though the so-called "evidence" against Iran's nuclear program, supposedly recovered in a laptop, have been proven to be forged documents and Iran poses no threat to the United States. Emanuel's selection slapped many Arab nations awake who hoped for a different approach and dialogue towards finding balance in the Middle East. In the coming days and months, lots of people are going to be slapped awake.

Get used to hearing the phrase "anti-semitic" during the Obama Administration, which doesn't appear to concern him. Obama himself has morphed into an Israeli hardliner right in front of our eyes, and "anti-semitic" will be the cover many of his policies, especially with regards to war.

With talk of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, the only Clintonite not on the short list of possibilities is Bill Clinton himself.

What he does appear to indeed be concerned with is that no one think him too black. Hell, he'll even consider appointing a man who believes the lives of non-white people have less value. What African-Americans will get for their overwhelming support is symbolism, but if they're looking for someone who'd appoint blacks to top positions in the government, perhaps they should have voted for George Bush.

But none of this is any surprise to those of us who have been hearing the words of Obama's song, not just dancing to the beat. Nor will it be any surprise that Obamanauts will continue to dismiss the glaring evidence that Obama now rides a different horse. They'll continue to blame Bush and republicans and never once notice or acknowledge that Obama rides the very same horse Bush, republicans, and Bill Clinton did. They never once acknowledged or noticed that much of the enormous money Obama amassed came from corporations and the banking industry. Blacks will declare that Obama needs to find the "best people", not just black faces, thus countering their own argument for affirmative action. The antiwar forces will shut their mouths, close their eyes real tight and hope that when they open them, body bags won’t be staring then in the face.

Everybody dancing.

No matter what the evidence, like gansta' rap, the beat just sounds too damn good and the words don't matter.

But just as with the Bush Administration, there will be many Americans who see through the smoke and mirrors. Not through the lenses of the insane right who will attack him with every knucklehead notion they can dream up, but with the truth that this nation is fully in the hands of the plutocracy of corporations, monied interests, and the State of Israel.

Just a side-note... When I went to vote, there was a guy in line with a t-shirt that said "The Manchurian Candidate." I have no idea who he was voting for, but I found it amusing. Let's hope Obama doesn't turn out to be that.

To no one's surprise, certainly not Bac's, I agree and disagree. I think he's right in that Obama is not what he's played to be. I don't think however he's too centrist. Truth is, I think he's of a different breed than any of us have thought of, yet my guess is the far left and most of the right are not going to be as disappointed as his cult followers.

As BAC has said numerous times, this has nothing to do with race, it's Obama.

I actually agree with you. Obama is clearly creating a certain type of administration that has less to do with political "sides" than it does creating a certain legacy.

Rahm Emanuel was a brilliant pick, although not for the Israel haters. It did two things. It told Nancy Pelosi that if she had any idea of pushing him around and setting the agenda, she was sadly mistaken and put the heavy muscle in between him and her while having someone around who knows how to get things done. To the anti-Israel folk, it said, "I told you I wasn't going to throw Israel to the wolves when I asked Jews to vote for me. Why didn't you believe me?".

As far as economics. I always said that anyone who thought he was going to be a socialist or communist wasn't listening. He is playing for history and he knows his time to get things under control is limited. He wants the smartest, most experienced people around him. Might that change later as things quiet down? Yes. But his being steady and more centrist whre he needs to be will give him a lot more latitide on those issues where he thinks more risk is necessary.

This is "No Drama Obama"... you're not going to see him make rash and stupid decisions.

We'll see. I wasn't impressed with his 'weekly address by the President elect' to the world via you tube. You were?

Malaise and downer and boring come to mind. Is that what you think was needed?

You're changing the subject.

And I haven't seen it. But I don't think I'd expect you to be "impressed" with anything he does.

On the other hand, HE ISN'T PRESIDENT YET!

Take a breath and see what he can do. I haven't decided what an Obama presidency is going to be yet, particularly given that it hasn't started.

I am, however, impressed with his chief of staff pick. I would think you would be as well. Or is it that you can't criticize him yet on anything real?

But he IS acting as PE., thus is accountable. My point from the beginning. You chose not to watch.

Another intelligent post from BlackasCoal, I'd rep him if I could.

Honestly, though, I want to wait until January to start passing judgement on Obama, who nonetheless is getting more and more disappointing by the day. Biden, Emanuel, Summers- all of the typical, reactionary Washington establishment. Hillary Clinton too, who said to the world on the eve of the Iraq war "you are with us or against us". His beating on the war drum of Pakistan and Iran isn't very heartening either... Added the fact that despite all of the talk, his campaign was still largely financed by the decaying corporate elite.

So where's the Change, Barry?

already criticizing him and he hasnt taken office. Also, your comment about not enough blacks sure sounds like the good ol "crabs in a bucket" theory thats been killing black people for decades. How about you relax abit and let him get into office before you start passing judgement, Fox News can take care of that for you

Obama is obviously economically ignorant. Let's hope you're right and he gets the right people to guide him in the right direction. For Bill Clinton, it was the Conservative-controlled Congress. Obama doesn't have that luxury right now.

Not that it makes blacks hate whites any less, but...

Rahm Emanuel and Lawrence Summers aren't white.

They're JEWS.

J-E-W-S Jews. Hebrews. The tribe. The Inner Party. The chosen people. The new master race.

You get the picture.

Not whites.

In fact, they HATE whites.

Just for the record.

I don't believe Jews are a race or sub race. I thought they were white myself.

Right, and Bush is economically dyslexic.:eusa_whistle:

Well Obama said tonight that we are not to worry abotu the debt for a couple of years because it's the long term stuff that's important---we shall see. I hope whoever he's talking to knows what he's doing.

You're confusing your candidates. McCain was the one who was economically ignorant.

Frankly, y'all GOT the natural conclusion of the policies or Reagan... it's called an economic collapse.

Time for the smart people to try to clean up the mess. But then again, didn't Bush bankrupt EVERY business he was involved in?

The election is over-Bush didn't bankrupt America--even Obama says so.
Time to try to encourage your own instead of tearing down the others. Obama is getting a dog in the spring ! I'm thrilled.

You are woefully ignorant and party-blind on economics.

The boom of the 90s was the natural conclusion to Regan's economic policy. The problem is in 1992 the D Congress and George HW Bush passed a law that began to create an artificial lending bubble by forcing banks to give small business, credit cards, and most of all mortgages to people who could not afford them. In order to get people into houses that they were giving too much loan for they artificially increased the worth by over evaluating prices on homes so that there was an artificial "equity" that later people were told they would "save money" by getting further into debt on....

This lending bubble helped to create the Tech bubble that first created a "recession" at the end of 2000 and the beginning of 2001 that was extended with the attack in 2001. (It did this because people used loans to purchase stocks, low interest rates pushed by the FED by urging of the Congress to get people into more homes effected the rates they paid for the loans they got on the stocks...)

Later an R Congress and Clinton extended what was supposed to be a limited-time plan. It was again extended, against the recommendation of the President in 2001 who proposed a budget that would have ended it, and would have created a special oversight over Fannie and Freddie...

Congress was stuck in "More <insert minority here> own homes than ever before!" mode and couldn't see the forest for the trees. And truth tell the President didn't fight very hard for the regulation that he should have.

Something good from Carter, something that made lending more equal, was turned into something that was not beneficial and it forced a creation of the lending bubble that we are feeling the effects of even today.
