About our National Day — Australia Day

About Our National Day

Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788 (you can read a comprehensive history of the evolution of Australia Day here).

Though 26 January marks this specific event, today Australia Day celebrations reflect contemporary Australia: our diverse society and landscape, our remarkable achievements and our bright future. It also is an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, and to consider how we can make Australia an even better place in future.

Not really "Australia Day" though is it, January 26th?
More like "British Colony Day", "Convict Day", eh?

Big W follows Aldi in recalling controversial 'Australia Est 1788' shirt

Retail giant Big W has followed Aldi's lead and has stopped selling a controversial Australia Day T-shirt.

The T-shirt is emblazoned with the slogan "Australia Est 1788" - a reference to the year the First Fleet landed in Sydney.

A spokesperson for Big W, which is owned by Woolworths Ltd, told the ABC the shirts have been withdrawn from sale.

The spokesperson declined to comment on the reason behind the move, which garnered a mixed reaction on Big W's Facebook page.

On Wednesday, discount supermarket chain Aldi withdrew shirts with the same slogan from sale after an outcry on social media.

The T shirt 'racist'? nah, but it could be seen as not including Indigenous Australians.

If we're still promoting "We are One", then we really need to include all Australians?

The T shirt;

. States "Australia, Est 1788"...not so, Australia was not established until 1901.
. Contains the Australian flag, which did not exist in 1788.

Federation of Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Federation of Australia was the process by which the six separate British self-governing colonies of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia formed one nation.
They kept the systems of government that they had developed as separate colonies but also would have a federal government that was responsible for matters concerning the whole nation. When the Constitution of Australia came into force, on 1 January 1901, the colonies collectively became states of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Flag of Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The flag's original design (with a six-pointed Commonwealth Star) was chosen in 1901 from entries in a worldwide competition held following Federation, and was first flown in Melbourne on 3 September 1901;[1]
This date has been proclaimed as Australian National Flag Day.[2]

A slightly different design was approved by King Edward VII in 1902. Over the next few years, the exact specifications of the flag were changed several times both intentionally and as a result of confusion.
The current specifications were formally gazetted in 1934, and in 1954 the flag became recognised by, and legally defined in, the Flags Act 1953, as the "Australian National Flag".

Australia Day should be celebrated on January 1st, not January 26th.
