(CNSNews.com) - President Barack Obama said in his weekly address today that he wants the Federal Communications Commission to create more of a “free market” in television in the United States by changing the way people rent cable boxes for their televisions.

Obama argued that a lack of competition in the U.S. marketplace is denying choice to American consumers and holding down wages.

“The most essential ingredient in a healthy free market is competition,” said Obama. “But right now, too many companies are engaging in behaviors that stifle competition--like blocking new competitors from entering the market or limiting the information and options that give consumers real choice.

“As a consequence, the rest of us pay higher prices for lower quality products and services,” he said. “Workers receive lower wages than they otherwise would.”

What is the point trying to be made? Is there one? Is there something wrong with a President in favor of increasing competition in an industry that has very little competition?

He can think of more than one thing at the same time...shouldn't that be a good thing?

Do you seriously believe that this incursion into the free market is worthy of the time of the President, given the condition of the world today?

Let's keep in mind that it is the FCC's control that allows the restrictive production of the cable boxes?

I can't believe we actually have to take the time to talk about this ....

That is his job. And the market is not free. Cable in most places has a monopoly that depends on federal, state and local governments for support. Why should they have such an advantage? How many cable companies will deliver cable to your home where you live? Why are local investors and business entrepreneurs not allowed to start up competitive companies to compete with the monopolized one?

They do NOT depend on "... federal, state and local governments for support ...", What they, in fact, depend on the government to do is to maintain their monopoly.

I do not disagree with the premise of competition for cable boxes. What I DO disagree with is the president involving himself in such a minor point of emphasis. People are dying as he dwaddles over troop deployment issues, people are starving as he can't make up his mind to send aid, people are suffering, both financially and physically, because he refuses to look at the obamacare debacle.

The man is a joke --- and he has abused both his authority and his power. And, now, this is THE most important thing he has to discuss with the American people? How about discussing $19 trillion of debt?

They depend on a long list of government laws and assistance, from government financed and operated satellites to the cable that runs through backyards thanks to government approved rights of way. Local and state governments protect them from competition by simply not allowing competitors to operate in areas and use those same rights of way.

This is what we get from conservatives: lies.

The world is not ‘burning’ – the notion is ignorant nonsense and idiotic rightwing demagoguery.

No, your ODS is a joke, your blind partisanism is a joke, and your thread premise is a joke.

Admit it...your real problem with the news item is that it has the name 'Obama' attached.

"The world is burning" is a stock campaign talking point for Republicans.

There are 5 providers in A.A. County, MD.

Verizon
Broadstripe
Comcast
Dish network
Direct TV

No to mention Hulu
Apple TV, etc.

Some areas in MD. do lack access due to the distance from the source or serving terminals.

Comcast charges the consumer to extend to the residence. Was informed of this when I thought of purchasing in Carroll County.

Verizon extends to the residence at no extra charge if service is available to the residence.

Usually when looking for a house I would consider, location, traffic and schools. I never took into consideration cable t.v. service as I rarely get an opportunity to view. But I did need reliable internet.

Some communities, and Cities restrict access as they have contracts with providers and as Camp said, protect these providers from competition. Baltimore City restricts access to certain providers.

There are more pressing issues that need attention. This is a local and State issue that really doesn't need Presidential interference.

Camp is referring to franchise fees.

Oh, there is something very wrong with this president, indeed.

Tell that to the Christians in Iran, the Kurds in Iraq, the poor in Ecuador, or the disenfranchised in Brazil. Your intentional self-induced delusions does not, unfortunately, change the facts.

Today spare change is arguing that the government should provide high speed internet to rural homes because companies won't do it. It's not profitable.

Why shouldn't the farmers in rural areas pay for it? Why is the government providing it? Doesn't sound very Republican or free market to me

No, dumb ass --- that's not what he's arguing at all. You seriously have a reading problem - and you need to get treatment.

By the way, this thread isn't about HSI.
