BEIRUT: Prime Minister Saad Hariri reaffirmed the Lebanese Army's role as the protector of the country's border during a parliamentary session Tuesday when asked about a looming offensive against militants to be carried out by Hezbollah.

“The Army is the party responsible for protecting Lebanon’s border,” Hariri said, in response to a query from Kataeb MP Sami Gemayel. The PM confirmed that the military has the full backing of the government.

Hariri also said the Army would continue to carry out operations in the area around the northeast Lebanon town of Arsal.

Gemayel followed Lebanese Forces MP Antoine Zahra in asking for clarification on a reportedly imminent military operation against militants near Arsal.

“There are armed groups belonging to Lebanese parties that say they will lead the battle, and we demand clarification,” Gemayel said, referring to Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah's declaration last week that his party would launch a military operation to liberate the Arsal area from militant groups.
