What Is Asylum?
Asylum is a protection granted to foreign nationals already in the United States or at the border who meet the international law definition of a “refugee.” The United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol define a refugee as a person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her home country, and cannot obtain protection in that country, due to past persecution or a well-founded fear of being persecuted in the future “on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” Congress incorporated this definition into U.S. immigration law in the Refugee Act of 1980.

(Thank you Jimmy Carter for another mess you created for us.)

I've seen and/or read multiple interviews of Asylum seekers and what was notable was that out of the 7 or 8 NONE of them claimed persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Every one of them described their life of hardship because of lack of jobs and/or fear of criminals.

Now I recognize that is an awful life. It just does not fit the definition of Asylum. Asylum was meant for people like Christians living in Muslim hell holes who are persecuted horribly based on their religion. It was not meant to upgrade a person's living standard. Sorry but you need to stay in your country and march on your government to force change.

it's stupid --like anchor baby crap
it's good for people that were spies for the US/etc
but not EVERY Tom, Dickhead, and Harry of the world
that shit goes on ALL over the world!!!
we would have to let in MILLIONS from many countries
''fear of criminals''---!!! very stupid
it's like a lot of laws--sounds good on paper, but in reality very stupid

Trump and his buddies are behind the caravan, how beneficial for him to come right before the election. Think about it.

This is happening all over the world, and the "invading hordes" will continue to come unless the countries with the wherewithal to help those countries establish some stability step up. The people in the caravan would have had no impact on these Central American governments, but the pressure now being exerted on them by the US is.
As John Kelly pointed out, the drug trade is what is fueling all of this, and we are the #1 consumer of those drugs. For that reason alone, we need to be stepping up to HELP forge a solution. Stop focusing on the symptom instead of the cause.

I'd love to force Asylum and citizenship on them. I mean they are here anyways and doing something to feed themselves anyways. Let's get some taxes out of them, sell them some houses to delay the next property value bubble, make them Americans.

We have no unemployment problem, the Chinese buy more cars than us and have a larger GDP, we gotta compete.

Not all are eligible for asylum, and no one said they were.

Maybe not, but they will get defacto asylum as they are caught and then released, awaiting their hearings. This will give them a couple of years to establish residence and produce anchor babies...even assuming they show up for their hearings. There are many reasons why we have tens of millions of illegal immigrants.

Bring them to Detroit. Detroit need people anchored to the city.

The migrants in that caravan are conservative minded individuals that want the freedoms we enjoy and yearn for free market capitalism. Here are a few of the things the migrants hate about Guatemala.

1. Not enough economic freedom:

Index of Economic Freedom. U.S. 75.7 vs. Guatemala 69.4.

2. Tough gun laws:

Why are they fleeing a country with such tough guns laws to go to a much more dangerous country with such loose gun laws? Don't they care about their own safety?

Go directly to jail: Guatemala passes tough new gun law

3. Multi-culturalism:

"There are 22 indigenous languages spoken in Guatemala. In many rural areas, people only speak their indigenous language. Many people, especially those who do not have access to education, will have little to no knowledge of Spanish. However, many medical professionals only speak Spanish and have no knowledge of the local language in the area in which they are working. As a result, many indigenous people find it difficult to understand their doctor and cannot comprehend basic instructions about their health care."

Five Reasons Why the Guatemalan Health System is in Deep Crisis

Look at it this way. Even though Guatemala has been blessed with a lower level of economic freedom (which has done wonders for their economy), the illegalization of private individuals carrying firearms (which has reduced their murder rate to merely 5 times that of the U.S.), a culturally enriching 22 different languages in a nation roughly the size of Maine, and an overall climate of well-ordered peace and prosperity, there are still ungrateful individuals with conservative values that yearn for what we have here in the United States of America.

I actually agree in principle with you that those countries need an intervention because they clearly are not going to fix themselves. The problem is we absolutely suck at nation building and policing other countries. I'm not sure what we would do exactly.

The caravans may be a distasteful problem, but they are a manageable problem. The question is, why do you think it is the responsibility of Americans to solve the problems of Guatemala and not the responsibility of the Guatemalans who have abandoned their country?

It is analogous to fixing a hole in a boat, as opposed to bailing buckets of water out for eternity.

I don't give a damn what their home countries are like.

They are coming here to enter illegally and must be turned back. It is an invasion and cannot be tolerated.
