Looks like the Arctic Ice is about to start the melt part of the cycle. If if does not gain some in the next two weeks, this will be a record minimum for the maximum.

Arctic sea ice could set an ominous new record this year - The Washington Post

The record to beat here is the year 2011, when the sea ice maximum wasonly 14.63 million square kilometers (5.65 million square miles). Last month the extent was 14.41 million square kilometers.

The trend right now in not good;

Abstract:
"Arctic sea ice extent in February averaged 14.41 million square kilometers (5.56 million square miles). This is the third lowest February ice extent in the satellite record. It is 940,000 square kilometers (362,900 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 long-term average of 15.35 million square kilometers (5.93 million square miles). It is also 50,000 square kilometers (19,300 square miles) above the record low for the month observed in 2005.

With the Arctic Ocean completely ice covered, the remaining areas of potential new ice growth are limited to the margins of the pack in the northern Pacific and northern Atlantic. Sea ice extent is below average across the entire sea ice margin, most prominently along the Pacific sectors. A small region of above-average ice extent is located near Newfoundland and the Canadian Maritime Provinces."

So, is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Seems to me that the last 10 years has tracked together very well, maybe time for a new average.

In 2003, there was a long lived blocking pattern in Europe, over 70,000 people died from the heat. 2010, Russia experianced a heat wave that killed about 15,000 there and had fires raging for months. And the last two winter have seen the East Coast of the US hammered with a hard winter, while the West Coast is in drought. Same kind of blocking parttern. A pattern caused by the effect of the lack of ice in the Arctic, and the resultant lower differantial between the Arctic temperatures and the temporate zone.

Global increase is 6.8 Millon Kl Square above average... The loss of 7% (which is within 2 standard deviations and considered natural variation) in the arctic is statistically insignificant.

What is significant is the open ocean which allows massive amounts of cooling in the arctic regions without sunlight. A Loss of some 346W/M^2. Also the cooling in the southern hemisphere where the albedo reflection is reflecting over 465W/M^2 at earths surface.

Between the two earth is cooling extremely rapidly. But you would never know this because we have alarmist who are making up heat increases where cooling exists. Soon however, there will be no escaping from their lies...

You keep posting this shit even though its been debunked over and over again. She is an alarmist shill..

You silly little liar. One can easily show what a liar you are. Here is where the global extent of sea ice is at present;

And while 7% is within two standard deviations, the present level of the Arctic Ice is outside of two standard deviations.

Now, Billy Boob, what is your next silly lie going to be?

Wait a fucking second. The pattern is caused by the imaginary "lack of ice* or does the pattern cause the tiny reductions in ice?

Lack of ice....lol

It has NOT been debunked. It is the current understanding of the science. It is you that is full of shite here. If you disagree, let's see some evidence.

A person who presents no evidence of his own demands evidence from someone else.... While ignoring the evidence that has been presented over and over again in other threads...

The true science denier meme... run in circles crying post the evidence and then ignore it when it is and do the same thing over and over again..

Ah Billy Boob, you have been presented evidence from the American Institute of Physics, the American Geophysical Union, NOAA, and the USGS, among other sources. In return you have presented nothing other than lies and flap-yap.

And Dr. Jennifer Francis is a Phd Meteorologist at Rutgers. Meanwhile, you are a extroidenarily stupid poster on this board of little consequence.

I looked at the source of the "70,000 dead" and knew it as total bullshit as soon as they said it was "peer reviewed"

Jennifer Francis is 100% correct but only retroactively

http://ec.europa.eu/health/ph_projects/2005/action1/docs/action1_2005_a2_15_en.pdf

In total, more than 80,000 additional deaths were recorded in 2003 in the twelve countries concerned by excess mortality compared to the 1998‐2002 period. Whereas 70,000 of these additional deaths occurred during the summer, still over 7,000 occurred afterwards. Nearly 45,000 additional deaths were recorded in August alone, as well as more than 11,000 in June, more than 10,000 in July and nearly 5,000 in September. The mortality crisis of early August extended over the two weeks between August 3rd and 16th. 15,000 additional deaths were recorded in the first week and nearly 24,000 in the second. The excess mortality in this second week reached the exceptional value of 96.5% in France and over 40% in Portugal, Italy, Spain and Luxembourg. Excess mortality exceeded 20% in Germany, Switzerland and Belgium and 10% in all the other countries.

Mega Heat Wave of 2010 Sets a Precedent Summer Climate Change

The intense heat wave that centered on western Russia last summer was truly a record breaker. It surpassed even 2003's scorcher in western and central Europe — which has been blamed for 70,000 deaths. And together, both of these mega heat waves have secured a place in the 500-year weather history of Europe, according to a new analysis.

The researchers also looked ahead, and found that a variety of different climate models predict an increase in mega heat waves similar to these in the 21st century for two regions within Europe.

From late July until the second week in August 2010, record heat settled across 772,204 square miles (2 million square kilometers) in Russia and Eastern Europe. In Moscow, the daytime temperatures reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.2 degrees Celsius), in Kiev, nights reached 77 F (25 C), crops were destroyed, fires swept across western Russia, and preliminary estimates now put the Russian death toll at 55,000.

What can you say. Frankie Boy will be Frankie Boy, and just tell whatever lie comes to mind, just like Billy Boob, Elektra, and Ol' Pig.

I thought it might bounce back up, but a week later, and the Arctic sea ice extent continues to fall. Looks like it did hit the max at an especially low level.

N_stddev_timeseries.png

Not that it means much on its own. It could still bounce back a bit, and the long term trends are what matter. And given that the unusually-unfrozen areas melt out each year anyways, it doesn't say much about what the minimum extent will be this year.

However, it will make it deniers look especially stupid when they inevitably try to push their "Arctic Sea Ice is recovering!" mantras. They'll still attempt to do so, of course. If they cared about looking stupid, they wouldn't be deniers.
