Exaggeration and Hollywood.

In reality, the Spartans were 300, of a force of over 11,000. And only a small part of over 1,000 that guarded that pass. In a 3 day battle with around 10,000 of the forward element. They had no more of a chance to hold that thing than the US Army did of holding the Fulda Gap.

But at least the Army did not plan on dying gloriously in place.
