Solar Decathlon's Rainy Start | The Weekly Standard

"Chu has reason to be hopeful that the competition pays off: The Department of Energy gives a $100,000 grant to each team just to participate in the Solar Decathlon"

Where are we getting all this money to pay these people to just participate!

Wonder if there will be any Solyndra exec's present

"Neither rain nor snow nor dead of night" will stop the solar hype..

The picture of that one $400,000 "shack" with a murphy bed looked like a short trailer without wheels. I'd like to see what's left of that investment after a couple good Florida thunderstorms or a minor tropical storm..

They should have been PROUD to show the power meters producing all that juice on a rainy day.. No TV for the kids tonight I guess. Let's go the library and charge up our electric cars!!!

Hey, as long as the Washington Monument doesn't fall on them, they are ahead, right?

The more I think about it -- the more I WANT those power charts from this D.C. Solar fair..

We PAID for this little commercial advertising experiment. Think I could FOIA the documents from the Head of DOE??? Would love to see how all those advanced expensive designs made it thru a couple dark stormy days on the mall...

Obama gonna get to the bottom of it...

Solyndra scandal probe widens as White House orders new review
October 29, 2011 - Faced with a growing scandal over the bankrupt Solyndra solar power company, the Obama administration has ordered an independent review of government loans to energy companies. Republican lawmakers say they'll subpoena internal White House communications on Solyndra.
The Obama administration has ordered an independent review of loans made by the Energy Department to energy companies – a clear response to the controversial and now-bankrupt Solyndra Inc. solar energy company. It’s the latest step in the face of growing criticism over the $528 million government loan to Solyndra, which was part of the administration’s economic stimulus package meant to advance green energy. Last month, FBI agents and investigators from the Department of Energy's Office of Inspector General searched Solyndra headquarters in California for documents and other information.

Heading the review announced Friday is former Treasury official Herbert Allison, who oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program, part of the 2008 Wall Street bailout. "Today we are directing that an independent analysis be conducted of the current state of the Department of Energy loan portfolio, focusing on future loan monitoring and management," White House chief of staff Bill Daley said Friday afternoon – the traditional time for burying announcements. "While we continue to take steps to make sure the United States remains competitive in the 21st century energy economy, we must also ensure that we are strong stewards of taxpayer dollars."

Announcement of the internal review of procedures dealing with Solyndra was not enough to satisfy congressional critics. Leaders of the Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee on oversight and investigations say they’ll meet this coming week to consider a resolution authorizing the issuance of a subpoena for internal White House communications relating to the Solyndra loan guarantee.

“Subpoenaing the White House is a serious step that, unfortunately, appears necessary in light of the Obama administration’s stonewall on Solyndra,” Fred Upton (R) of Michigan and Cliff Stearns (R) of Florida said in a statement. “Since we launched the Solyndra investigation over eight months ago, the Obama administration has unfortunately fought us every step of the way, even forcing us to subpoena documents from [the White House Office of Management and Budget].”

Secretary Chu to Testify on Solyndra November 17
October 27, 2011 - Fox News has confirmed that Energy Secretary Chu will testify before the House Energy and Commerce oversight subcommittee on November 17 regarding the federal loan for the failed solar company Solyndra.
"Secretary Chu looks forward to the opportunity to appear before the committee and highlight the steps we are taking to ensure American workers and innovators can compete in the global clean energy market. We have offered a number of dates in November. Committee staff indicated that November 17 will work, and the Secretary will be there," said Damien La Vera, a Department of Energy Spokesman.

The Obama administration has come under fire for a loan guarantee they gave to the California company. E-mails released showed the administration was possibly too eager to get the loan approved that ahead of Vice President visiting the company. President Obama also eventually also visited Solyndra, saying they were a good example of innovation in new energy technology. The company received a $535 million loan guarantee in 2009, filed for bankruptcy this year and was raided by the FBI in September. It's under investigation whether the Energy department violated the law in trying to restructure its loan, which would have repaid investors before taxpayers, if Solyndra was unable to make payments.

The Energy Department says they have consistently cooperated with the investigation, providing more than 65,000 documents and making officials available for briefings. Chu's testimony, as first reported by Politico, will be a key moment in the scandal that has lingered over the Obama administration for months. Subcommittee Chairman Cliff Stearns, R-Fla. said he hopes the hearing will move the case forward.

"We hope he will finally provide answers about why DOE consciously ignored the direct warnings from their own experts that Solyndra was doomed to fail, and granted the loan to Solyndra. We are also interested in why Secretary Chu and the Energy Department, at a time when Solyndra was fresh out of cash, still went ahead and restructured Solyndra's loan in violation of the plain letter of the laws," Stearns said.
