Invictus
By William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul

My favorite poem for a few reasons....anyone else like it?

Not a poetry fan but I assume that poem is the inspiration for the Invictus Games.

As a kid, I had chores to do and penalties if they weren't done. But there was a football game going on in the yard, and they really needed me. I had just learned this poem in 4th grade. So, I took the bar of soap, wrote this on the bathroom mirror, and crossed my fingers:

I meant to do my work today—
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand—
So what could I do but laugh and go?

I Meant to Do My Work Today

We won the game, and my wonderful Dad gave me earned credit. :eusa_angel:
