They are very similar. Communism is a form of anarchy where there is no government and everything is held in common.

Karl Marx said that socialism is a pathway to communism, but I think he was wrong (about many things, but this especially).

At some point, human nature will bring down the communist collective unless someone fills the power vacuum. Disputes over work responsibilities and property use will inevitably require someone with authority to settle those disputes. Enter the "benevolent" government to help folks live the utopian dream and control the means of production. Boom. Communism leads to socialism, which is the goal of the American left.

I prefer to call them "commies" because it is more pejorative, and I love to fight Alinsky with more Alinsky.
