JENIN, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli forces killed an Islamic Jihad commander in a West Bank raid and militants in the Gaza Strip fired rockets at an Israeli town on Tuesday in violence that strained a four-month-old ceasefire.
"Revenge, revenge," shouted hundreds of Palestinians, some firing in the air, as they bore the body of Islamic Jihad's Maraweh Ikmil to burial in the city of Jenin.
Israel said its raid on the nearby village of Qabatiya, in which Ikmil and a Palestinian policeman died in clashes, was in keeping with the truce declared by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in February.
An army officer, Major Sharon Asman, said Ikmil had planned to send suicide bombers to strike inside the Jewish state.
