That is correct. That is why there is an energy loss of about 40%. Still, that is energy that would otherwise not be used. There are methods like pumped hydro that are far more efficient, but require the right topography. Grid scale storage is a problem that has many solutions, so matching the best solution to the location is paramount in keeping the costs low.
 
Old Rocks The first SMR design was just approved for use in America a year ago, so it's not a surprise you haven't seen much data on cost efficiency in use. France is planning on using them by 2030 and I believe we will see them serving remote US communities within a few years.
