The UK government has suspended rail franchise agreements for six months and agreed to assume all revenue and cost risk posed to operators, after railways experienced a 70 per cent drop in passenger numbers following the advent of coronavirus.

They called Corbyn a commie for proposing this during the election and now here we are. This is initially for 6 months but they will likely find that corporations will be reluctant to return to this industry when things get back to normal.

The railways are an essential service and the private companies have always been backed by government money. Time to rip up the facade and run the network for the benefit of the country.

Americans, this is why Leftists are all over Twitter today, panicking and hyperventilating about "the virus". It's not about the virus at all. They saw their chance to nationalize everything and, at Trump's signal yesterday, they see their chance melting away.

Don't be fooled. Let the UK go their way; they're sunk and have been for a long time.

We are not them.

THANK GOD

When we taxed people at high rates, we made survival more difficult in lower paying jobs. So as the taxes go higher, private companies may have harder times in having success. A balance is always needed in this. But there is always movement in the joint marriage of socialism and capitalism. Those in privileged jobs for the most part ride the top of the wave and more often then not, benefit..

Its about private rail companies collapsing despite huge government subsidies. Why would we subsidise companies when we have to step in and pick up the pieces anyway ?
UK rail service is pretty much the worst in Europe. Hopefully it will improve because of this.

Keynesean economics failed but was designed to so gov't could step in to save the day- it's *controlled from a central bank* Trickle Down economics at its finest.

How does that work ? The tories privatised the railways in the first place and they are devastated that they have had to take this action. You are allowing dogma to blind you to the reality.

Look in the mirror- top down is controlled trickle down which is keynesean economics it doesn't matter what political stripe it wears-

I'd suggest educating yourself prior to trying to fuck with me on monetary systems.

When the fucking government imposes lock downs what did you expect?

You think money magically appears when customers don't show up?

Exactly right....which is why we shouldn't be bailing out airlines and hotels -- if we do, that opens the door to socialism and nationalization of private industry......

The free markets are more than capable to handle this

Of course, the vultures will get back to sucking everything they can out of their their prey once UK taxpayers have shouldered the costs arising from the Corona crisis.

Another free market fail as Britain nationalises the railways…
Not a free market fail.

A British fail.
Absolutely right. When the government doesn't allow the free market to be the free market, don't go blaming failure on the free market.

Gawd almighty...

Free market would mean, let them fail. That's what free markets mean, sorting out by market forces which business is viable, up to and including building up cash reserves so as to weather rainy days.

Of course it's a free market fail, socialism for investors - and taxpayers fleeced to protect the investors' bank accounts.

good points-----from where will the queen get the money to
keep up trains upon which no one rides or transports?

The socialists are cheering this. The people who re-nationalised the failing railways are the same people who nationalised the network in a misguided move. Your ignorance should mean that you should keep quite on issues of which you are. ignorant.
