Crazy George 3 was still in power when the Brits tried to regain control of the Colonies around 1812. Brits still ruled the sea and they were nothing but pirates who kidnapped American merchant sailors at will. When the fledgling U.S. protested, the Brits tried for a 2nd invasion. They managed to burn the U.S. Capital and they spent time shelling Ft. McHenry in Baltimore harbor. British land troops weren't so fortunate when they met Old Hickory at the mouth of the Mississippi river and the leadership of Andrew Jackson saved the U.S. republic. What year was that war again?

Saved the republic? The war was already over by the time of the Battle of New Orleans.

If the Brits took N.O. the U.S. wouldn't have extended beyond the Mississippi. In a way that might have been a good thing. L.A. and Chicago would be the Brit's problem and so would Mexico.

Old Hickory said we can take 'em by surprise if we didn't fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes". Johnny Horton "the battle of new Orleans".

Also, Chicago is east of the Mississippi.
