Charleston County School District weighs diversity issues as Academic Magnet s black enrollment plunges - Post and Courier
Well...Charlestons elite Academic Magnet HS...ranked as the 10 best public high school in America. Every kid in Charleston County who attends public school can apply for a spot there. Its public...so income doesnt matter. You just have to be, well, really smart.
But...black enrollment has plummeted since 2002.
One reason is fewer blacks have applied. Its a mostly white school for smart kids. Bad street cred I guess. And...fewer qualify.
See...Academic Magnet HS uses a raw number system of 15 points. Every applicant gets points for things like SAT and GPA.
Race...isnt one of the points.
Now...the minority community wants a lottery. Some black kids were scoring a 13. Very smart kids. But...far more had 14-15 scores. So...the best got accepted.
So they want a lottery. So if 500 apply for 50 spots...its not the top 50 who get in. They want something like the top 200 to get put into a pot...and a lottery picks who gets in.
So your kid could land a perfect 15. Be the #1 ranked applicant. And not pop up in the lottery...and have his/her spot taken by the 200th ranked candidate.
For fairness. Ya know?
