Competition with other gambling spots may be the lesser of Las Vegas's problems. Lake Mead seems to be drying up due to the brutal drought in California. Las Vegas is maybe the least sustainable city location in the U.S.

Lake Mead has nothing to do with the California drought!

It gets its water from the Colorado River watershed which is the entire west side of the Rocky Mountains. From what I've seen, it's got a decent snowpack and the spring runoff may actually help fill the lake up a little bit.
