It was founded on the idea that ordinary people could run their lives without interference from government. And that they deserved the opportunity to run their lives without interference from anyone else, unless they approved of it. The government's job was to keep others from interfering - either domestic criminals or foreign invaders etc.

And the Federal govt had NO other job. Not health care, not regulating the size of light bulbs, not running schools, not zoning your neighborhood etc. If state or local govts wanted to do those things they could... but the Fed couldn't. And the Constitution was written to engrave those ideas in stone.

The leftists are violently against such ideas, of course. Having the biggest govt possible to run those things, is the entire reason for the leftists' existence.
