Seriously, how the heck did this happen? A prop gun?

Authorities have confirmed that actor Alec Baldwin fired the prop gun on the set of his film “Rust” that killed director of photography Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.

Earlier, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said a 42-year-old woman was airlifted to a hospital after being shot by a prop gun, where she died. A man who was shot was getting emergency care at another hospital, according to the Associated Press.

Local news station KOB4 later reported that the sheriff’s office confirmed Baldwin had been the one to fire the prop gun.

Sad, she was a gifted cinematographer. Whoever the propmaster was is clearly incompetent.

Bruce Lee's son, Brandon, died in similar circumstances.

On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene in The Crow where his character is shot and killed by thugs.[97] In the scene, Lee's character walks into his apartment and discovers his fiancée being beaten and raped. Actor Michael Massee's character fires a Smith & Wesson Model 629 .44 Magnum revolver at Lee as he walks into the room.[98]

In the scene preceding the fatal scene, the gun was loaded with improperly-made dummy rounds, cartridges from which the special-effects crew had removed the powder charges, so in close-ups the revolver would show normal-looking bullets. However, the crew neglected to remove the primers from the cartridges. At some point before the fatal event, one of the rounds had been fired; although there was no powder charge, the energy from the fired primer was enough to push the bullet into the gun barrel, where it got stuck (a condition known as a squib load). For the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be fired at Lee from a distance of 3.6–4.5 meters (12–15 ft), the dummy cartridges were replaced with blank rounds, which contained a powder charge and primer, but no bullet, allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. When the blank round was fired, the bullet lodged in the barrel was propelled forward with almost the same force as if the round were live, and it struck Lee in the abdomen.[99]

The Crow was still released in theaters. They filmed the rest of the movie using CGI overlaid on another actor's face. It looked terrible.

Baldwin will probably skate on this. Even killing someone in cold blood is unlike to get a lib in trouble.
He isn't trump and it wasn't on 5th Avenue. Depends on the investigation and circumstance. Prop man probably getting a good going over.

  1. You can't have any of that lights-camera-action stuff without prop guns.
  2. They do have to be aimed in the right direction and make a loud noise when fired, or it isn't realistic.
  3. So. Real guns with blank brass cartridges crimped without bullets for ammunition.
  4. These guys are professionals. Who's fooling with their stuff?
