Revealing nothing more than the movie trailer, the new film "Stowaway" creates a scenario where an interplanetary scientific expedition to planet Mars is jeopardized by the presence on board of an unknown third party - a "stowaway." Obviously, there is not enough food or oxygen on board to take care of FOUR people when the whole thing was planned for three. The film shows what the four of them do in response to this true dilemma.

But to be vulgar about it, after the dust settles on this expedition, we have two healthy young men, a cute, sexy young woman (played by Anna Kendrick), and an ugly old crone on board, and one of them has to go - one way or another. The whole thing takes place in the first couple weeks of this TWO YEAR expedition.

Is it plausible to posit that the two healthy young men would insist that the Ugly Old Crone be jettisoned?

Given that one of them is married... Both are working under the assumption they are going to be able to go home, and the old crone is in charge... No... I don't think so.

If an extra 1 person means they would run out of O2 before they even reached Mars, they still wouldn't have enough O2 to get there and back.

Fourth party.

Is it plausible to posit that the two healthy young men would insist that the Ugly Old Crone be jettisoned?

Would they face criminal charges upon their return?

The supplies for the return trip were already sent to Mars on a separate rocket.

And... If you watch the movie there are two other ways as well. Or... That's what they said anyway. I think one of them is wrong, but I'm not a botanist.

The expression "third party" is a term of art. If there is a table for ten and someone new shows up, that person is a "third party."
