40,000 new laws take effect in 2014

It may have been the least productive year for Congress in history, at least in terms of passing laws – fewer than 60 of which made it through the House and Senate and were signed by President Barack Obama.

Across the country, however, state lawmakers were busy getting more than 40,000 bills passed, ones that tackle everything from drones to food stamp benefits.

In Illinois for example, teenagers will no longer get to use tanning beds without a doctor's note. If you live in Delaware, visit the shark fin buffet while you can, a new law will make it illegal to own, sale, or distribute the controversial delicacy. And in California, new laws take effect that will let students take part in school sports, or use bathrooms based on their gender identity, regardless of the gender noted in their birth certificates.

Legendary attorney, Harvard law professor, and author of "Taking the Stand" Alan Dershowitz joins "The Lead" to discuss some of the other fascinating – and controversial – new laws of 2014.

Dershowitz is a treasonous bastard and should be one of the last persons speaking about freedom and whats best for America.

Yes, Dershowitz is an Authoritarian Progressive. He's usually fully onboard with more Laws. But he is a Lawyer after all. In this video, he's defending all these new Laws for the most part. I wouldn't call him 'treasonous' though.

I agree with the point that there are too many laws.

The only Silver Lining in this, is the fact Congress didn't do as much damage as it usually does. I mean, it did do a whole lot of damage, but just a little less this time around. CNN bemoaning the 'least productive Congress', is actually cause for me to celebrate. I truly believe Congress should only meet a couple times a year and for very brief sessions. The more they're there, the more damage they do. I would prefer they meet far less often.

Less federal governing, more state governing. This gets the conservative stamp of approval.

Spot On. Thanks for that. We are a Police/Prison State now. By far, we lead the way in the World in imprisoning Citizens. It's very sad.

How many new regulations were there last year that have the effect of law.

These laws aren't federal laws, they are state laws. Surprisingly enough, California passed Voter ID.

Yes, Congress was surprisingly and refreshingly somewhat inactive. They still did quite a bit of damage though. At this point i'm a staunch supporter of 'Do-Nothing' Congresses. They should meet far less often and for very brief sessions. The less they're there, the less damage they can do.

I pray everyday for a 'Do-Nothing' Congress. The less they do, the better off Americans will be.

Jeezus you Ron Paul supporters need to get a grip on what you support and what you don't support! What he is discussing is 40K new STATE laws. You know the 10th amendment State's rights crap you fools peddle all the time.

If you actually listened to the video it discussed the fact that State laws are on the rise and FEDERAL laws are decreasing. He stated he sees that trend as the norm because of how divided Congress is and will be into the forseeable future.

All Ron Paul preached was State rights and the vast amount of state laws is precisely that STATE'S RIGHTS. Esp when it comes to legalization of pot aspect.

Also laws are necessary and I like some of the laws that are coming out. The ban on shark fins is a good one. The disallowing of colleges to use student's FB content to deny them is another. Legalization or decriminalization of weed is another. There are always bad laws, but if you are arguing that no laws need to be passed your a bigger fool than that asshole who supports over-regulation.

For the most part these laws are not business impeading regulations. Those are the laws I have the most problem with!

You fools don't know what a police state is! Some of my last relatives to come to America told me about the Soviet Police state. I have heard from many middle easterns about the Islamist police states. I went to a lecture in law school from Chinese Business man who told me about the Chinese police state!

We are not living in a police state, but we DO live in a modern society of computers and cameras etc.!
