CHICAGO (CBS) ― At least 29 people were shot and three were killed over the weekend, and gunfire injured more than a dozen people in the wee hours both Saturday and Sunday.
As the weekend came to an end, two men were shot when someone started firing "indiscriminately" into a large crowd of people in the busy Uptown neighborhood.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m. the shooter, a man, was at the northeast corner of Broadway and Wilson Avenue and fired at least five shots "indiscriminately" south toward a currency exchange, where a large crowd of at least 30 people had gathered, witnesses said.
A Police News Affairs release early Monday said two men -- 47 and 25 -- were struck by gunfire and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The younger man was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and the other man was shot in the abdomen and was in serious condition, the release said.
The intersection is located just below the busy Wilson Red Line 'L' stop, and just east of Truman College.
But the gunfire over the weekend wasn't limited to the cover of night. A man was shot in broad daylight in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood Sunday afternoon.
The man, 24, was in the 8900 block of South Racine Avenue at 1:35 p.m. when two people approached him, at least one of whom pulled out a handgun and opened fire, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in stable condition with gunshot wounds to his head and lower back, police said.
Earlier, at least thirteen people were shot -- one fatally -- in a little more than five hours between 10:45 p.m. p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday, with most shootings taking place on the Northwest and Southwest sides, according to police News Affairs reports.
That wave came on the heels of a six-hour stretch from midnight to 6 a.m. Saturday, which also saw 13 people shot, two fatally, police said.
In one fatal shooting, a Burbank man was shot in the back in the 5100 block of South Sacramento about 12:10 a.m. after a man inside a vehicle opened fire, police said.
Yusuf Yusuf, of Burbank, was pronounced dead at 12:49 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. A motive for the slaying was not known early Sunday.
The shootings began about 10:45 p.m. Saturday in the Northwest Side's Albany Park neighborhood, when a 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were shot in the 4100 block of North Kimball Avenue, police said.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was taken in serious condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, while the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken in good condition to the medical center, according to police.

At 11:49 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was walking in the 0-100 block of West 111th Street when shots rang out and he was hit in the back and left arm, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in an unspecified condition.
At 12:20 a.m. Sunday, a 25-year-old man was driving in the 5200 block of West Addison Street when someone shot him in the right leg, police said. The man was in good condition at an area hospital Sunday evening.
At 12:50 a.m., 17-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen in the Southwest Side's Marquette Park neighborhood when a van pulled up to him in the 6600 block of South Mozart Street and opened fire, police said. He was taken in stable condition, also to Christ.
Ten minutes later on the South Side, a 48-year-old man was working on a vehicle in the 4900 block of South Laflin Street at 1 a.m. when he was shot in the right arm, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in stable condition.
At 1:55 a.m., a 20-year-old man was on his way to a liquor store when a person fired shots from a passing vehicle in the 3400 block of West Irving Park Road, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in stable condition.
At 2:22 a.m., a male of an unknown age was in the 2600 block of North Hamlin Avenue, walking to a friend's house, when someone shot him in the abdomen and right arm, police said. He was in stable condition Sunday, also at Masonic.
At 2:26 a.m., an 18-year-old man was washing his car in the 900 block of North Long Avenue when two people approached him and started shooting, leaving him with a graze wound to the arm, police said. He refused medical treatment.
At 3:58 a.m., two men, both 19, were injured when two people approached them and opened fire in the 1000 block of North Central Avenue, police said. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, one with gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen, and the other with a graze wound to his ear.
Finally, at 4 a.m., a 23-year-old man was one the sidewalk in the 1300 block of North Hamlin Avenue when someone drove by and opened fire, striking him in the right ankle. He was listed in good condition at Norwegian-American Hospital.
The violence also continued into Monday morning. Three men were shot near 30th Street and Christiana Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood around 3:50 a.m.
As of Sunday evening, no one was in custody for any of the shootings, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.
