NBC poll: 17% approve of Congress - First Read - msnbc.com

Asked if they would still vote to replace every single member of Congress if that resulted in Democrats still controlling Congress, nearly three-quarters (72%) said yes.

And asked if they would still vote to replace every member if that resulted in Republicans controlling Congress, a virtually identical number (73%) said yes.

According to the poll, if their congressman votes with Republicans to defeat the bill, 34% say they would be less likely to re-elect that member, 31% say they would be more likely to vote for him/her, and 34% say it makes no difference.

However, if their congressman votes with Democrats to pass the legislation, 36% say they would be less likely to re-elect that member, 28% say they would be more likely to vote for him/her, and 34% say it makes no difference.

Translation: "There is no easy place right now in the health-care debate," says Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted the NBC/WSJ survey with Democratic pollster Peter Hart.

The survey showed Congress with a paltry 17 percent approval rating from the public, with opinions decidedly mixed on lawmakers seeking to stop or advance President Obama's health care agenda.

The same poll, by the way, says Congress' approval rating is near an all-time low. Just 17% of Americans approve of the way lawmakers are doing their job, while 77% disapprove. Looking ahead to November, 45% prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, 42% Republican

So much for a Republican landslide. It just goes to show, you can't run as the "Party of No".

On the other hand, Democrats have got to quit trying so hard to be "partisan". Republicans passed a 2 trillion dollar tax cut and a drug bill "gift" to the drug companies, both through reconciliation. Why can't Democrats?

I'm always impressed by your total inability to not understand really basic shit like the difference between using reconciliation for taxes and using it to legislate. Really, rdean, even your own Messiah said back in '07, that using reconciliation to pass healthcare would be unconstitutional, against the founding principles and that any President who used it may still have the trappings of office but that President had lost the ability to govern. He straight out said that he would not use the 50 + 1 route to pass such an important piece of legislation. Sen. Byrd (the Democrat) who designed reconciliation, said it was not appropriate for healthcare..... why, oh why, are you too stupid to grasp such basic shit? Surely to God, you cannot be this stupid!!!?

Well NBC would pad the numbers wouldn't they? They're always in the tank for the Democrats. 17% is a high estimate. The actual approval number is more like 10%. This NBC Poll is actually being kind to the Democrats. Either way they're a monumental disaster. Worst U.S. Congress in History? You bet.

It is amazing that it is that high. Congress has not done anything to warant 17% approval

i have less of a problem with reconciliation, which still requires a majority vote to pass legislation, than this *deeming a bill passed* bullshit, although i'm sure caesar, pompey and crassus would approve of it.

oh, on the original topic, rdean continues to blaze new frontiers in the name of all the purblind people, everywhere.

I'm not sure that a 3% poll difference means Republicans are the "Party of No," or that it means they will not do well in November.

The results of the poll leads me to believe that INCUMBANTS will have trouble in November, regardless of their party affiliation. My guess is that challengers (democrat and republican) that embrase platforms of smaller government, less taxation, and more personal freedom will succeed.

"It's the Congress, stupid." -- I have been saying that for three years.

By FAR the worst thing President Obama inherited was this same Congress.

The Republican drug plan passed through reconciliation was "legislation". It had nothing to do with taxes.
