Tomorrow (8 January 2014), marks the 50th anniversary of LBJ's famous "war on poverty". For the last 50 years, the United States government has wasted 15 TRILLION dollars (and most economist claim it is closer to 20 trillion) fighting a war to do away with poverty.

Why are there still "poor" people in this country? Where did the money go? Why do we continue to (literally) throw billions of dollars away each year?

The left loves to trumpet the idea that the "war on drugs" is/was a failure. Money spent on this "war"? estimated - 287 billion dollars. Again - the "war on poverty" - 15 TRILLION dollars.

LBJ and his "Great Society" - smoke and mirrors for legalized theft and re-distribution of income. Just like Barry Obama.

Big business turned it into a subsidy for low wages and low food prices and therefore perverted the original intent.

Not only has it been an enormous waste of money and resources, but the "war on poverty" has destroyed black families. In my opinion, that is the biggest waste of all.

Big business doesn't give a damn about the war on poverty and has had absolutely nothing to do with it.

The war on poverty has always been about handing out Government cheese to buy votes. The Democrats don't give a shit about the poor or they'd would be making sure the money was actually helping people out of poverty. It does not. The entire social welfare state is designed to keep people dependent and in poverty, and therefore keep them life long Democrat voters.

I have told this story many, many times and several times on this forum. I am black; the son of a black Air Force officer (Father) and a black Chemist (Mother).

My Dad was stationed at Donaldson AFB in the early 60s when the liberal, white college students came to our house telling us how great it would be if we signed up for all the "programs that were being offered by the US Government" designed to "take us out of poverty".

My Dad (A Colonel at the time) nearly threw them all the way to the curb - screaming all the time "Get your communists asses out of my house!"

Mom and Dad lived through the depression. Never asked for a thing from anyone - let alone the government. To them, to accept a hand out was an admission of failure. Unfortunately, I have known far too many black men and women who have gamed the system for generations - choosing "free" out of a sense of entitlement. Most have been on welfare and food stamps and WIC for as long as I have known them.

"Free" breeds "Lazy"

The entire food industry from farmer to store shelf is so dependent on food stamps and other subsidies that it would all simply collapse into ruin if some asshole party were to succeed in taking them away. You should be aware of this fact before talking as if it were all for poor people, it's for everyone who wants food to be on the shelves when they go to the store.

So, let me get this straight...your implying that if food stamps were stopped today, farmers, grocers and distributors would go belly up?

You're out of your mind.

You might do some research on the matter rather than just being a repeater of hard words and harsh opinions. Unless you live in an area where there are an awful lot of rich people your local food store would go under in two months or less without food stamp revenue. That's just the start, there is a very fragile infrastructure involved in getting food from field to store that would probably start to break down immediately. We are talking warehouses, truckers, whole-sellers, inspectors, farm workers, entire industries laying off people because the food industry just lost all that money.

The irony of that post!

Nixon ruined that, and Raygun went after the middle class with his demented idiocy and bs propaganda machine. Mission accomplished...it'll take time to turn the ship around...

1. WORKERS past 63 years worker productivity has grown by 2.0% per year.But after 1980, workers received a smaller share every year. Labor’s share of income (1992 = 100%):1950 = 101%1960 = 105%1970 = 105%1980 = 105% – Reagan1990 = 100%2000 = 96%2007 = 92%A 13% drop since 1980A 13% drop since 1980

2. THE TOP 10% GET A LARGER SHARE.Share of National Income going to Top 10%:1950 = 35%1960 = 34%1970 = 34%1980 = 34% – Reagan1990 = 40%2000 = 47%2007 = 50% TO MAKE UP FOR THE LOSS.Household Debt as percentage of GDP:1965 = 46%1970 = 45%1980 = 50% – Reagan1990 = 61%2000 = 69%2007 = 95% An increase of 16% since Reagan.

3. WORKERS COMPENSATED FOR THE LOSS OF INCOME BY SPENDING THEIR SAVINGS.The savings Rose up to Reagan and fell during and after.1950 = 6.0%1960 = 7.0%1970 = 8.5%1980 = 10.0% – Reagan1982 = 11.2% – Peak1990 = 7.0%2000 = 2.0%2006 = -1.1% (Negative = withdrawing from savings)

4. Household Debt as percentage of GDP:1965 = 46%1970 = 45%1980 = 50% – Reagan1990 = 61%2000 = 69%2007 = 95%A 45% increase after 1980.

5. SO THE GAP BETWEEN THE RICHEST AND THE POOREST HAS GROWN.Gap Between the Share of Capital Income earned by the top 1%and the bottom 80%:1980 = 10%2003 = 56%A 5.6 times increase.

6. AND THE AMERICAN DREAM IS GONE.The Probabilityy of Moving Up from the Bottom 40% to the Top 40%:1945 = 12%1958 = 6%1990 = 3%2000 = 2%A 10% Decrease.

Fella, after retiring from the Army, I worked as a traffic manager for one of the largest grocery wholesalers in the United States. we serviced some 3600 Midwest Grocery stores, from Co-opt owners to chain stores to private owner franchises. I handled everything from dry grocery to dairy to fresh meat to frozen food on a daily basis. from inbound freight to outbound full truckloads to member stores.

25 years.

Again, you are out of your mind.
