I've worked in warehouses but i don't remember gettin' no $1200 a day! This is unskilled work! So many people in america are grossly overpaid.

Union Workers Force Shut-Down of Western Ports

feb 7 2015
The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) announced that loading and unloading operations at all 29 West Coast ports would temporarily be suspended this weekend in response to union slowdowns that brought freight movements at the ports to a near standstill.
PMA members stated that they cannot afford the almost $1,200 per day cost to employInternational Longshore and Warehouse Union members to do little work.

After Breitbart broke the story on Thursday that union members of the ILWU planned to “walk out within the week,” the PMA employer group announced they can no longer continue to pay workers the premium pay for diminished productivity.

With ILWU members continuing to withhold the needed crane operators and slow crane movements, shippers and their customers estimated they were losing $1 billion a day. But a complete shut-down is expected to raise the U.S. economic pain to $2 billion a day.

.
The steel workers are going on strike at the same time. This is all a conspiracy to ... do something or other. Probably make Obama look bad ... wait ..hold on ...

The eventual outcome is they will price themselves out of existence. There are huge ports being built in Canada and Mexico that can handle most of the traffic we get in the US ports. The shippers will eventually move everything to those ports and yet again a union will have managed to kill itself. Back in the 1950's and 60's the US had a huge Merchant Marine. Then the Unions began to flex their control and now there is only one left, and that because to be a part of the Military Transport Command, Matson HAS to be a US flagged company.

John McPhee wrote a very good book about the issue called "Waiting for a Ship". I have friends who worked for APL and they all ended up going into different line of work because they couldn't get a ship to crew on.

No, the American economy will probable not break. And I'm sure your ilk are disappointed to hear that.

No one roots harder against America than fringe conservatives.

I think Breibart exaggerated the longshromen's pay more than slightly.
According to PMA's website (the company in the OP):

The analyst firm has compared salary data from Pacific Maritime Association’s (PMA) homepage with the average salary in the U.S. According to the website, the longshoremen on the U.S. West Coast earn an average of 98,603 USD a year including two and a half weeks of vacation on average. The earnings are about six times as much as the minimum wage in California and more than double the 42,000 USD including bonuses, which is the average salary for all Americans, according to Silicon Valley Index
U.S. longshoremen earn three times average national wage

This analysis was published on July,13, 2013.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This works out to roughly $380 a day, less than 1/3 of the $1200 per day Breitbart reported. Now they could have had a pay raise, but it's very highly doubtful the longshoremen received that large of a raise in a year and a half.
Why anybody takes Breibart seriously baffles the mind. They seem to be constantly full of shit. But the loyal goose-steppers keep coming back for more complete bullshit.
However, $380 a day is still pretty outrageous. It's more than two times the average wage earner makes.

-we pay our congressmen and senators about $700 dollars a day, IF THEY ACTUALLY WORKED 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year....more like $3000 a day if you count it for the days they actually are in session and work....

-being a longshoreman is a very physical job for most of them, at least it used to be backbreaking and can only be done for so many years of the peak years of your healthy life....kind of like football players... then they suffer from arthritis and aches and pains the rest of their life....

It's almost all driving now. That and crane operation. There is vey little real physical effort these days. Can't afford the time needed to offload that old fashioned way.

$1,200 per day? That's not credible.

Neither is the anti-worker right-wing scum that infests this message board.

Joining the Merchant Marine used to be a rite of passage for many of us in port cities.

Today, US Merchant Marine is almost non-existent.

But, the pay is damned good.

With the right combination of overtime and holidays it could happen occasionally.

I used to work on container ships.

When we left port, we had to check every container to make sure all latches, locks, chains, etc, had been secured by the longshoremen.

This took about 30 minutes.

Since it was longshoreman's work, we got their pay.

If they clock in, they get a minimum of 4 hours.

Since we did this in addition to our regular hours, we also got overtime for that.

If it was a weekend or Saturday, we got even more.

Sometimes we got more for that 30 minutes than we got for 3-4 regular days at base pay.

I could see the unions finagling a $1,200 day here and there.
