12 Indicted In Federal Probe Into Philadelphia Government
Probe Uncovered When Listening Device Found In Mayor's Office

PHILADELPHIA -- A federal grand jury has indicted 12 people -- including the former city treasurer, a powerful city lawyer and two Commerce Bank officials -- in a wide-ranging probe into corruption in Philadelphia city government.

Among those indicted were Ron White, a politically powerful lawyer who is friend of and political contributor to Mayor John Street, and Corey Kemp, a former city treasurer.

The indictment alleges that from January 2002 through October 2003, White "corrupted" former city Treasurer Corey Kemp by making payments to him.

In exchange, Kemp followed White's directions regarding which financial service companies would be selected to carry out city bond transactions, prosecutors said.

Two Commerce Bank-Pennsylvania officials made favorable and otherwise unavailable loans to Kemp, prosecutors said.

Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street has not been charged.

The probe became public on Oct. 7 when police conducting a security sweep discovered a listening device that the FBI had placed in the City Hall office of Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street.

Over the next few days, federal agents seized Street's hand-held computer and raided the offices of two of his supporters, the power-broker lawyer Ronald A. White and the leader of a Philadelphia mosque, Shamsud-din Ali.

The FBI also seized hundreds of boxes of records from the city's finance department, its retirement board, development agencies, and an office in charge of helping companies owned by minorities and women seek city contracts.

Street has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly said that he does not believe he is a target of the investigation.

In late fall and early winter, federal prosecutors revealed in a series of letters to other probe subjects that the wiretapping efforts ranged far beyond the mayor's office. Among those tapped or bugged were White, Ali, an official at Philadelphia's city-owned airport and the city's treasurer, Corey Kemp, who resigned abruptly in November.

On June 2, a federal grand jury indicted Ali's wife and two stepchildren on charges that they defrauded the Community College of Philadelphia. A college administrator and her son were also indicted on fraud charges. Prosecutors said the five participated in a conspiracy to pay no-show teachers for adult literacy classes that never took place.

All those cries that Bush was trying to meddle in the philly election or the Racist cries from the Dems during that Mayorial election last year over this seem rather ignorant now. Just another example of Dems playing politics with everything. No wonder Philly is a shithole.

Philly, D.C., Newark and Detroit are shitholes because they are occupied and operated by blacks. Everybody on some level knows this, but few have the stones to say it. If you think otherwise, name one majority-black city, neighborhood, country or continent you'd like to live in.

Its not blacks that are causing the problems. There were problems back with govenor Rendell was mayor. Heck i think he has caused more of it.

No, the problem isnt blacks. the Problem is liberalism. Liberalism has had control of the city for so long, destroyed the education system. raised the taxes, chasing away the businesses.

The Immoral "social" liberalism has broken down the families of blacks, hispanics and yes even whites in the city making more people dependent on welfare. Telling everyone to do whatever they want because there is no consequences has given us generations of idle people who expect the world to hand them whatever they want. And when life isnt this bliss they are told they turn to drugs and alcohol to forget their problems.

I hope someday i can see the city of Philadelphia return to the greatness it had at the time of the Founding. We were the city of the American Enlightenment. We can become so again someday. But we need to return the power back to the people. Cut taxes. Give parents vouchers so they can send their children to schools that work. Bring business back and teach people how to work and the confidence that comes with self reliance and you will see the cities become great again. I dont care if you are black, white, red, brown, yellow, purple etc. Teach them correct principles and give them the freedom to choose their destinies and you will see great things.Teach them correct principles and men will govern themselves.

Blacks arent the problems. ive seen immigrants from Africa come over and succeed easily because they are willing to learn and work. The problem with the home grown Black culture is that liberalism has seeped into it so much that for some reason they dont think they can succeed without the government giving them breaks. Its liberalism that is the cause, not the color of their skin.
