Probably setting up a closing argument. The argument is going to be something along the lines that many think 1/6 was an attempt to influence and overturn an elections If trump was willing to be part of that interference he obviously would have no issue doing what he is charged with.
It also puts him on official record as wanting to show up so he doesn’t have the normal wiggle room of being able to deny he said it or try and claim it was just a joke.
