It's probably buried in cyberspace somewhere but one radio talkshow host used to do Hanuka Carols (snipets):
Bagels roasting on an open fire, whitefish nipping at my nose.
Don me now wholesale apparel, ay yai, yai. ay yai, yai, ya, yai - yai - yai.
Radio host? Coulda been Bob Rivers? He's got a ton of Xmas parodies (and non-Xmas). I've been posting them regularly (they're usually pulled off YouTube). The one I just posted was the Three Weissmen. They also do a version of Jingle Bells which I haven't found. Yet.
No, I'm familiar with Bob Rivers, it wasn't him.
My version (never finished) was:
My nuts roasting on an open fire, cannibals dancing round the fire.

After the revoltin' developments on the gridiron this weekend, I resolved to decorate the Luxurious Pimplebutt Estate for Christmas this afternoon. I wanted to drape a garland of grapevines and red berries across the doorway from the Great Hall to the private west wing. To hang that garland, I need those 3M double sided adhesive hooks. I thought I had some leftover from last Christmas in my junk drawer.

Everyone has a junk drawer. Usually in the kitchen, far from the action at the stove, sink or refrigerator, folks keep a drawer just for that sort of thing. A package of screws, a deck of cards, a flashlight, some handy hand tools, picture hanging wire, cellophane tape, dried up ball point pens all can be found buried in the junk drawer.

I had to rummage around in mine to find those little plastic hooks and the taped pads that hold them up. On my way to realizing that I did not have those hooks anymore, I came across a book of matches with Elvis Presley's face that I got at Graceland in 2001. I found the torn off upper left corners of envelops from letters and cards I have received. That's the corner with the return address. Some of those addresses were for people dead for five or more years, some are addresses for folks who have moved more than once since caring enough to send me their very best, as it were. I found little replacement light bulbs for outdoor lighting systems long removed and obsolete.

That catch all, that cramped little drawer, that junk drawer can hold surprises which should not be seen as junk. It sometimes holds the stuff of memories.

When Mom was pregnant with me during the late summer of 1956, she and Pop and her In-Laws went to the Allegheny County Fair. The fair isn't an event anymore, having been replaced by the Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Pittsburgh Regatta and the interstate highway system. But it was quite the place to be for people living in my neck of the woods.

Mom, most stereotypically, began to crave pickles while at the fair. Pop and Grandma noticed folks leaving the Heinz exhibit with plates of pickles. The Heinz headquarters is in Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers LOVE Heinz and their products.

So the family took their place in line so a pregnant Mom could enjoy the sour, salty delights of a big Heinz dill pickle. The line stretched on and on and my 'family to be' was patient but sweaty. And soon thirsty, and foot sore. But they waited. Like Soviets waited for shoes, like immigrants waited to have their surnames changed by a tired bureaucrat at Ellis Island, they stood and waited.

After forty five minutes, they arrived at the door of the Heinz exhibit. Another twenty minutes and they finally got to the table serving delicious Heinz products, especially the pickles Mom yearned for.

But the crowd had taken their toll on supplies. There were no more juicy, tangy pickles. Heinz offered Mom, Pop, Grandma and Grandpa inedible swag. Little plastic pickle pins. About an inch long and a quarter inch wide, the pins were in the shape of a tiny gherkin with HEINZ stamped in the plastic and a small safety pin attachment mounted on the back.

Since that day, "pickle pins" could be found in Mom's junk drawer. They migrated to Mom's jewelry case. They found their way into Mom's break front standing sentry over the good dishes. Pop would occasionally find one nestled among his cuff links in his jewel box. We would find a pickle pin somewhere in the house at least twice a year.

Mom and Pop would always giggle a little, Mom would retell the story and smile wistfully. When we buried Pop in the Spring of 2008, Mom made sure that I put a pickle pin in the breast pocket of Pop's burial suit.

What's in a junk drawer? Some of the most precious momentos of life, if you look hard enough.

I'll have to admit, those pictures are from when I was working at Reno HD. There's a lot of new tools in each drawer now, but they're still as clean and well arranged as ever. I need to get new pictures as a matter of fact, for insurance sake. I have my tools insured for $100,000.00, and it would take all of that to replace them.
Had a buddy with tools like that. When he retired, I moved him out to Nebraska. We tried for an hour to push his main box up the ramp into the 40 foot semi trailer but couldn't do it.
He had an older Honda Civic that was going in the semi too, so we ended up towing the box onto the trailer with the Civic.
Then we put a tow bar on the trailer and hooked a Pugeot 505 on the back.
We, unfortunately, centered the tow bar. I drove that rig all the way from CT to Nebraska, only seeing the car when I would pull in for fuel.

Bob was a master! he could rebuild 2 hydro-locked Civic engines/day.
God forbid you borrowed a tool!
Without turning around, he would reach back, open the drawer and count back a few places for the right wrench. If it wasn't there, someone was going to be injured. Whenever I worked with him, I would clean tools, but leave them for him to put away.
Most techs I ever worked with they'd just pitch their wrenches or pliers or whatever into a drawer, not cleaned, just thrown in. Sometimes their chest drawers wouldn't close because everything was piled so willy, nilly. I couldn't understand how they could treat their tools like that. Mine are cleaned and put away after I'm done using them every day, even if I'm not done with what I was using them for, and when my big Matco chest was in my bay at the dealership, it was also locked up every night. My initial investment was $38,000, and that was with a 50% discount because I was a graduate of MMI. I've easily bought another $20,000 since then. It's easy when one wrench is $180, or like the 1/2 inch impact I just bought, $460. A few tools, there's another thousand. And we're talking all Snapon and Matco. There's no chinese crap. I do have a second top and bottom chest that does have some Craftsman in it and such, but someday I'll have a huge auction and sell it all, take that money and travel the world or something, IDK.
As an aircraft mechanic, I learned to have a place for everything and everything in its place. It really isn't very professional (or safe) to be leaving tools in places where you've been working. Having them organized makes it easy to see, at-a-glance, whether anything is missing.

I spent 1 1/2 years in an Aviation unit. Made many a walk down the strip looking for FOD....( I think I remember that right, it's been a while)

FOD walks are still a part of my daily life. Amazing what you find on the flight line.

Well, I'm very tired. I think I'll turn in very soon and get up early to prepare for Finals tomorrow. I can certainly use the month off from school, and teaching. As soon as grades are posted, I'm going to give my place a much needed, thorough cleaning.

Also, since Tracy drove me to the station and picked me up today, I bought her a necklace, with the heart and dagger logo on it. She loves it. I said we should both attend the next concert, which should be in about three or four years.

I’ll go up a couple levels.” Unbelievable. I don’t care if you’re driving yourself or someone else to the Emergency Room, you still want to get out and run in with them. I know a couple of CSers have been complaining about idiots off the rails in Politics (read: more off the rails than usual) but now I'm seeing it. Nothing but relentless attack and baiting for more attack. Even a couple of innocuous threads, one about Christmas trees, the other about a domestic violence report, got pounced on by those who want to hyperpoliticize everything no matter how nonpolitical. I definitely am getting the feeling there are no more honest debates to be had out there.

So I came across this page -- We're not programmed to seek truth; we're programmed to "win".
>> It's called the argumentative theory of reasoning, and it says that humans didn't learn to ask questions and offer answers in order to find universal truths. We did it as a way to gain authority over others. That's right -- they think that reason itself evolved to help us bully people into getting what we want. <<

In other words most of what we enter into as 'debate', is nothing more than a psychological game to address one's own inadequacies -- a game we stay in even if we know we're in the wrong. If this is the case I'm severely disillusioned. It makes the whole reason for being here kind of pointless. Wonder what others think of this theory...

I didn't read the link...regarding the issue of debating, most people who hang out here don't do so to follow strict debating rules. It's mostly just a lot of people who want to express their opinions/vent. Plus, it's entertaining.

So I pull up at the entrance to the Emergency Room. No valet parking. I mean, if that’s not the biggest oversight in our solar system…if there’s ever a time when you want to go, “Can you park this because I need to collapse immediately?” But no, I’m circling around the parking lot trying to find a spot. “Can I park there, I think I’m gonna die?” “I’m dying too.” “OK, go ahead. I’ll go up a couple levels.” Unbelievable. I don’t care if you’re driving yourself or someone else to the Emergency Room, you still want to get out and run in with them. Are you supposed to drop somebody off and go park the car? “OK, you go in! Tell them you’re SHOT! Ask them if they validate!” Unbelievable. ~ Brian Regan

Yeah I know -- I guess what I'm getting from the article is the idea that when we go into a debate we're not in it to express an opinion at all, but simply in it to vanquish somebody. Which just makes the whole charade seem meaningless...
