So I am firmly on record against Christmas in any month other than December (with the exception of the Thanksgiving weekend in late November.

I am now ready to accept my penance. I made my first Christmas gift purchase today. I ordered a bushel of navel oranges for the parents of my Brooklyn friend today. I bought them because the orange merchant offered free shipping and last year's prices for orders placed this month. I know that everyone in my friend's family loves those oranges as I bought them 3/8 bushel last year and they went fast! So I upped the ante this year by 5/8 of a bushel. Not to worry! I specified a delivery date of December 18 so the gift will still be exclusively Christmas in nature.
I do most of my Christmas shopping on line these days. No crowds, no hustle and bustle, and I get to do it in my jammies while drinking hot beverages.

THE 2013 DARWIN AWARDS .....
You've been waiting for them with baited breath, so without further ado, here are the 2013 Darwin Awards:

Eighth Place:
In Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys.

Seventh Place:
A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who "totally zoned when he ran", accidentally jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run.

Sixth Place:
While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom, when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Fifth Place;
Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor.

Fourth Place;;
Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger.

Third Place;
After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol.

The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt.

HONORABLE MENTION;
Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2 A.M. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice that the window was closed.

RUNNER UP:
Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more excited, and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge, they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable lay nearby. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located.

AND THE WINNER IS....
Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborn, Germany ) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded.

The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves....... 'Shit happens' ......
IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPORTANT TO THANK THESE PEOPLE FOR REMOVING THEMSELVES FROM THE GENE POOL ........
Two years ago, Daisy the Mutt suffered from constipation. She was miserable and I contacted the vet. She recommended several remedies including a specially formulated dog food.

But then I thought, if my dog is constipated, why mess with a good thing?

Daisy did eventually enjoy relief. But at 12 pounds, she could never generate enough force, as it were, to knock down anything.
That's not a dog, that's only one mouthful for my former dog Snoopy. Not that Snoopy would eat someone else's rat, I mean pet. Gosh I miss Snoopy.

Must've been Snoopy. She was big, she was loud, but she was a coward. When the neighbors had a barbeque one time, she snuck over while we were eating and their little rat, I mean dog, chased her out.

And I think we can remove Colonel...The NASIDs they gave him have got him running to his favorite telephone pole and jumping up on the bed.....

We Christmas shop all year long in specialty and seconds stores and consignment shops.

We will be putting up the Halloween lighting and pumpkins on the 1st of October this year, two weeks earlier than usual, but this is the first Halloween in our retirement condo.

We both love this time of the season.

Reminds me of one of Hombre's bosses years ago. Hombre had made some kind of comment about our dog (a mixed breed) and the boss's dog that happened to be a miniature poodle. The boss swelled up indignantly and proclaimed, "Hey!! There is a big difference between a dog and a poodle!"

My "rat" Daisy the Mutt:

She is the sweetest dog I've ever had and behaves as well as she is treated (like all dogs).
Reminds me of one of Hombre's bosses years ago. Hombre had made some kind of comment about our dog (a mixed breed) and the boss's dog that happened to be a miniature poodle. The boss swelled up indignantly and proclaimed, "Hey!! There is a big difference between a dog and a poodle!"[/QUOTE]He's right. Miniature poodles are actually little people who run your house without saying a word.

We both love this time of the season.
I decorate the outside of the Luxurious Pimplebutt Estate for autumn, but not specifically Halloween. Providence sets the date. Once the flowers in the window boxes no longer bloom, they get sent to the neighbor's compost pile and are replaced with more mums, pumpkins, Indian corn and cornstalks. I also have a garland of fake autumn leaves strung along grapevines and that gets displayed along the front portico balustrade.

That can work through Thanksgiving. Then after the first week of December, the Christmas decorations come out.

Sally the ShihTzu, all eight pounds of her, does a really good job of that too though she is pretty vocal. When she wants the people she rules to do something, it is accomplished with a rapid series of barks accompanied by hopping up and down on her front feet. Gets your attention in a hurry. She has been ordering us around for going on 24 hours now.

But then we have been told by our friends, that, when they die, they want to come back as our dog. We just don't see any point to having critters that aren't family and they are treated as such here.
