Thousands of Spaniards in central Madrid have vowed to defy a ban on their protest camp and continue their open-air sit-in.

Spain's electoral board has ruled that the gathering cannot continue into the weekend.

It argues the protest could unduly influence voters taking part in local and regional elections across the country on Sunday.

The decision was met with jeers in Puerta del Sol, where thousands gather every evening - and hundreds have been camping out for five nights now.

Dubbed the "Spanish revolution", the protest began with a march through Madrid on Sunday, led by young Spaniards angry at mass unemployment, austerity measures and political corruption.

There's a Spanish president in there somewhere!

The protest in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square has remained peaceful

Spain is poised to begin voting in regional elections as thousands of young protesters remain camped out in squares across the country.

Demonstrators are angry at the government's economic policies and Spain's high youth unemployment rate.

Their numbers have swelled despite a ban on political protests ahead of elections.

The governing Socialists are expected to suffer major losses in voting for city councils and regional governments.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government is struggling to overcome recession and create jobs.

In the capital Madrid, about 30,000 people have occupied the central Puerta del Sol square.

Similar protests, popularly known as M-15, have sprung up in many other cities including Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Bilbao.

My solidarity, my best wishes and my love to the Spanish demonstrators.

I love when socialist protest about no jobs! Boo hoo. It's how your government treats businesses in your country! See they aren't going to say ease up on businesses, stop the reckless spending, stop taxing and regulating businesses out of your country. Rather the lazy socialist are going to scream about not enough taxing the rich, businesses, not enough wasteful spending, not enough government etc. Liberalism is a mental disorder!

Things were so much better under the Right Wing Fascism of Franco, right?
Spain has come a long way since Franco's death in 1975.

You list all the reasons you hate fish, then declare your disdain for pheasant?

So, it's a binary system? Either socialism or fascism, with nothing in between?

Hmph. I though conservatives were the only ones to engage in black/white thinking.

Guess not.

And now they're circling the bowl, thanks to socialism.

I love how liberals like you try to say that take over of the corporate, business and free market is rightwing. Just like the National Socialist Workers Party, aka the Nazis. Spain used to have a dictator, but it was a socialist dictatorship. Like the USSR and the Nazis!

Francisco Franco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Franco's state became less violent, but during his rule non-government trade unions and all political opponents across the political spectrum, from communist and anarchist organizations to liberal democrats and Catalan or Basque separatists, were either suppressed or tightly controlled by all means, up to and including violent police repression. The Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) and the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) trade-unions were outlawed, and replaced in 1940 by the corporatist Sindicato Vertical. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) were banned in 1939, while the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) went underground.

Since we have got onto the subject of Franco, I should point out that the failure of the western democracies to intervene early to stop the rise of fascism led directly to the second world war.

All those US war graves are due to
1. Not invading Germany when it appointed Hitler Chancellor in 1933 or before when the Nazi party was on the rise.
2. Not coming to the aid of the Spanish republic when the Fascist General Franco waged civil war on the Spanish republic with the help of the Nazis and their victory there and with the western democracies doing nothing was all the encouragement Hitler needed to invade Czechoslovakis and Poland and the rest was history.

So years later when Eisenhower went to Spain to meet and greet with Franco shows us that some American politicians learned nothing from WW2 apart from how to win it at great cost.

Similarly at great cost, and our generals learning nothing, we are winning the war on terror without identifying the real enemy - unreliable or back-stabbing monarchies and kingdoms like Saudi Arabia whose kingdom is funding or inciting Arabs or Muslims to jihad against us, or the Saudi monarchs' friends, the UK monarch who as head of the commonwealth is useless at getting commonwealth member Pakistan to take a strong stand against our Taliban and Al Qaeda enemies operating in Pakistan.

All Americans ever need to do to help themselves the most and make a better world is to act early in a way commensurate with your own democratic republican principles enshrined by your founding fathers and perfected down the years in your US Constitution. (Not perfect yet, but not bad.)

Instead, Americans have elected governments who waste time on diplomacy while the enemy monarchs and fascist dictators organise their plans against the free world when our enemies' only interest was to defeat the USA.

They won't win. We will win. But that isn't the point. We are winning the hard way when there is an easier way.

Wise up America.

The 2011 May Spanish protests, also referred to as the 15-M Movement, Spanish revolution or Indignados (Spanish for "Outraged") are a series of demonstrations in Spain whose origin can be traced to social networks and the ¡Democracia Real Ya! (Real Democracy Now!) civilian digital platform, along with 200 other small associations.

The video features photographs of the 2011 Spanish revolution protests and solidarity People of Europe Rise Up for Real Democracy protests in London, Edinburgh and Berlin.

The music used is by Queen: "Las Palabras De Amor".
Music by Brian May, Sung by Freddie Mercury.

This is a partisan video which promotes republican leadership of the Spanish revolution 2011.

The video recalls and celebrates the inspiration of the Second Spanish Republic 1931-1939 cut short by the defeat to the forces of the Fascist General Franco, using recordings of the republican leader Dolores Ibárruri, "La Pasionaria".

Not my video this next one, but pretty good!
