Castro is a top five terrible dictator of the 20th century. However dumb he is not. He used and schooled the Black Caucus. I find it funny they were outwitted by such an old guy. I'm 50% Cuban and I'm all for normal relations. The embargo has failed because Canadians and Europeans go there all the time for vacations. Even when the Soviet Union fell the Chinese came in to prop up Castro. The Chinese are going to start drilling in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast (Where we can't drill) and refining the oil in Cuba and then sending it through the Panama Canal back to China. Our Cuban policy is a miserable failure.

We did it all the time during the Cold War days. Somoza, Baptista and even Saddam for a brief period. We helped some of the worst dictators in the world as long as they were our guys. The trick is to make him your dictator. We blew it with Castro right after the revolution. He was willing to deal with the U.S. but not on the old terms. Kruschev was willing to give Cuba the moon and stars because having a base 90 miles from the U.S. was priceless to them. Castro made the best move for himself and allied himself to the Soviets. There was a brief time right after the revolution where Castro could have been brought into the American camp on equal terms.

Castro had Communist tendencies and followers but we certainly pushed him into the arms of the Soviets.

Cuba, Castro and Eisenhower

American companies were unwilling to give up their investments so 50 years later we have an embargo on a little Banana Republic Communist Island but we deal with the Communist Chinese and now even the Vietnamese. Castro will be dead soon. we might as well start relations with the country but we need to send intelligent people to deal with the Cubans and not these yo-yo's that were used by the dictator.
