A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.

The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.

The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.

The officials who are familiar with reports of the submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico said the vessel was a nuclear-powered Akula-class attack submarine, one of Russia’s quietest submarines.

A Navy spokeswoman declined to comment.

One official said the Akula operated without being detected for a month.

So.....back to the original story.....can we get a refund on what we have spent on our failed military technologies?

Only if that refund is matched with the billions obama passed out to his buddies in the banking industry, the GM union, and other failed endeavors like Solyndra, among many other political give-aways.

i agree with that and CONSERVATIVES should point that fact out. Its not against spending, spending wiser, and thats the crux of it, but if you dont want an aggresive taking of the military than go with a better defense, but its one or the other.

But conservatives only think that we should spend wiser on social programs not on the military.

That is not true.
Conservatives are upset at wasteful spending in all departments, especially in the military.

Then why aren't any conservative legislators proposing them? Why doesn't the "conservative" Ryan/Romney budget include ANY defense spending cuts?

The same people who believe we can safely gut the military because we don't need a strong national defense also believe police officers should get $200,000 a year.

Odd how that works in the liberal mind.

TARP, including the GM bailout occurred while Bush was President.

They didn't know it was there until after it left? No pun intended but the story sounds fishy. My guess is that it's a cheap attempt to create a fake crisis to get bigger funding. Personally I think trimming the military budget and cutting back on toys for big boys is a reasonable issue. We have the greatest Military bogged down in a God forsaken part of the world today because politicians want us to fight by rules set by the enemy. Meanwhile the fat asses in the Pentagon plan bigger freaking ships and high tech planes we don't need..

. . . but maybe I'm not your typical "libruul."

I think there are way too many police, and they have way too much power. But that's just me.

The best way to control a military/police state is to defund the military and the police.

So, we shouldn't get a refund on that one, then?

Now hold on there just a minute, Slick, If the sub was UNDETECTED until after it left, how could they know it was there for several weeks or even that it was there at all???????

Damn you are gullible!!!!! :rofl::lmao:

You can have any size military you wish............. Jusy open your wallet..

Let me repeat that...YOUR WALLET.............

I'd rather open it for that than for generational welfare recipients.

The Military Industrial complex IS a generational welfare recipient.

A police officer making $200,000 a year? By god if someone agreed to this then ALL THE POWER to him for getting it. Its survival of the fittest out there. I say good for him. Now, I surely dont want to GUT the military, but for some its a sacred thing never to be looked at. To me thats hogwash. Trim trim trim.

and yet you stupid fucks whine like bitches when anyone talks about cutting police.

when you need someone to help you defend yourself, remember that you cut the funding of those who rise to that occasion.

do not be surprised when no one is there for you when you are losing you life.

Seems like conservatives are... Yes... Republicans... Not so much.

How'd the French make out with their Maginot Line there, by the way? Still standing, some parts of it, I understand?
The Maginot Line was not backed up with nuclear missiles. Nor was the Ziegfried Line.

To quote General George S Patton "If oceans and mountain ranges can be overcome, then any fortification erected by man can be overcome."
By them as well as us, and vice versa.

How long did Hitler's 'Festung Europa' last on D-Day? In case you don't remember, all of six hours.
Today's world is a very different place.

The only effective defense is the ability to smash any and all enemy armies into dust and drive the peoples they sprung from into extinction.
You're right. And we have that ability. Mutually Assured Destruction is our defense against Russia and their defense against us. So their submarine sniffing around in the Gulf of Mexico is nothing to worry about. I'm sure we have subs sniffing around in their back yard, too.

Two billion of 'em you, say? "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
Two billion Muslims, most of whom are ready and willing to die, is a lot bigger than one elephant.

'The American Soldier does not fight for the sake of conquest! He fights to liberate!" - FDR. No less true today, than it was on April 10th, 1945.
Who have we "liberated" lately?

You do not liberate a people by destroying their nation. In doing so you demoralize, degrade, humiliate, divide, and impoverish them. Best to leave them alone.
