Brings to mind, this from Berman's "Terror and Liberalism,"...

5. Herein one can see the weakness of a belief that humans can use ‘reason’ sans morality, to guide life, since supposedly intelligent folks can gaze at the craziest and most violent of movements, and claim to find no basis to be upset, or surprised. This earnest response, dismissal of the danger emanating from irrational mass movements, can- to some, seem entirely normal and understandable. Such is what we have come to call ‘reason.’

a. Even to folks such as journalists, writers, and politicians, who calmly report and discuss pathological movements, find believable explanations, and move on.

6. What might one say to move events from what should be shocking, to the category of the prosaic, commonplace?

a. Well, it must be exaggerated, or even untrue.
b. Such behavior might be a well-deserved pin in the side of the rich and powerful.
c. Propagandists are painting distorted pictures, as is usual by the powerful and conservative classes.
d. Surely some unspeakable social condition has provoked said pathological attachment to murder and suicide…thus it is actually a rational reaction!
e. Undoubtedly, a small group of exploiters of imperialists, carrying out terrible deeds, have driven millions of people out of their minds.
f. Or a humiliation beyond human endurance! …..for the human race does not act in irrational ways.

7. Does this not recall that arguments were used to convince liberal-minded people of the virtue and progressive nature of Stalin and the Communist movement…even during its most malevolent days? Deliberately starving to death millions of Ukrainian farmer, or that he reintroduced slave labor, or that he was whimsically liquidating his own followers and comrade? Extraordinary, unlikely, impossible. Not consistent with the civilized ideals of the Marxist movement.
