Would You Support A Sheriff Like Joe Arpaio in Your Town?

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona), who created the 'Tent City Jail,' has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails, took away their weights, and cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up cable TV again and only let in The Disney Channel and The Weather Channel..

He cut out coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This isn't the Ritz-Carlton . . if you don't like it, don't come back.'

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees, a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.
Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their PINK SOCKS.
'It feels like we are in a furnace,' said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the TENTS for 1 year. 'It's inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths!

I'll take two, please!

We have a great county board chairman thought:

Arapaio is a sadist. His policies are a massive fail. But his tough guy posturing is enough to satisfy right wing 'tough on criminals' ideologues. I'm astounded by his support. I don't understand it.

Nothing to be astounded about. You said it yourself. two thousand seven hundred law suits against him and he still gets re-elected. The people there don't believe your numbers and they like Sheriff Joe. they obviously believe he is either getting results or saving them money or both. Still hasn't been any proof that he has done anything criminal.

Things like say Tent City and the way his deputies have treated inmates.

How is tent city mistreatment? The way inmates are treated? Give specifics and how they are tied to his actual policies. I completely agree with tent city. There is nothing inhuman about pink cloths and hot tents.

Back in the 1990's, Sheriff Arpaio took away the television privileges of the inmates in his jail and instead broadcast Newt Gingrich college lectures on "Renewing American Civilization" which were excellent.

Yeah let's turn our prisons into a place for one guy to force people to listen to his political views. That's not completely corrupt or anything.

Although to be honest I haven't found a good source for the newt claim.

But I agree jail should not be inhumane and nobody's life or health should be jeopardized while they are incarcerated.

I imagine Sherrif Arpaio's jail is safer than most

And you base this off of? I'd wager a guess that Tent City is more dangerous than most. When people get hot, they're more prone to anger and tent city has less things to distract the inmates. I bet there's far more fights at Tent City than average.

But jail should be uncomfortable and boring and not a place somebody would covet returning to? You bet.

Who said it shouldn't, and more importantly who would actually want to go to prison, even the ones with TVs (who has actually been to prison)?

If our guys in the military wearing metal helmets, flak jackets, and toting full gear can handle 100 degree heat, often without any shade, there's no reason that guys in light clothing in tents on the desert are being mistreated.

What an arbitrary and stupid standard.

Our soldiers can handle being shot at so let's shoot at the prisoners. Our soldiers can handle PTSD so let's try to force our prisoners to get it. Some soldiers are trained to handle torture so let's torture our prisoners.

Soldiers are volunteers, people are put in jail when they are awaiting trial.

Back in the 1990's, Sheriff Arpaio took away the television privileges of the inmates in his jail and instead broadcast Newt Gingrich college lectures on "Renewing American Civilization" which were excellent. He wouldn't let the inmates watch the sex and violence they would normally choose, and I don't think that was a bad idea.

But I agree jail should not be inhumane and nobody's life or health should be jeopardized while they are incarcerated. I imagine Sherrif Arpaio's jail is safer than most, and there are no accounts of inmates not having enough food or water.

Sounds like Arapaio would run a great concentration camp, complete with right wing propaganda. It says alot that you approve of such draconian measures. He's right wing, so I suppose that excuses his excesses. He's not an effective sheriff:

•Violent crime rates have risen under Arpaio’s watch while they have fallen throughout the rest of Arizona.
•Arpaio’s department has not served over 40,000 felony warrants.
•Arpaio has been suspected of misspending $50 million in taxpayer funds and refused to turn over his records for an investigation.
•Over 2,700 lawsuits have been filed against Arpaio.
•The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department is or has been under investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Departments of Justice and Labor.
•Evidence exists that Arpaio forced an undocumented mother to give birth while handcuffed to a bed.

In an April 2010 interview on “Larry King Live,” Sheriff Arpaio admitted that he arrests “very few” non-Hispanics. Arpaio attempted to justify his admission by citing Arizona’s proximity to Mexico, but ignored the fact that non-Hispanics still make up almost three-quarters of the state’s population.

Yep, he's your kind of guy.

And I do not support the corruption but support the points in the OP. I have said so over and over again so I do not care about the claims of corruption. That is taking us down another path entirely as they have not been substantiated and the proof apparently is not there. I will not make a judgment call either way. Do you have a problem with tent city and taking away TV and replacing it with lectures. I like the idea though people are jumping on the ideology bandwagon. Maybe we should try straight lectures on biology and science instead of those on political points.

It is neither arbitrary or stupid but comparing it to the conditions that soldiers undergo in the battlefield is quite stupid. The sweltering heat and living conditions are given to solders as accommodating LIVING conditions and prisoners should get no better. The conditions in the battlefield are necessary and not wanted. Prisoners should in no way be exposed to that aspect of our fighting force. Why are you so hot on spending money to ensure prisoners are taken care of that you will not even see spent on taking care of our soldiers. Those living conditions are not inhumane or cruel, they are facts of life not only for soldiers but even for some of this nations poor that cannot afford cable TV and AC. Not to mention that those that have been convicted of a crime DID volunteer for jail time, they just thought they would play the system and get away with their end of the bargain. For those that are not convicted yet, there are issues in that and I can see claiming that there be better accomidations for those individuals. I would not be against provisions that gave the presumed innocent AC and an extra channel or two. For that, you would need to separate the populations. That is something I think should be mandatory anyway.

Sheriff Joe made a comment on the news this morning, he said the people in tent city were all convicted, at least that's the way I understood it.

Right. The way I understand it, those in the tent city are mostly or all of the type not considered dangerous and are serving generally fairly short sentences. But they have all been convicted and sentenced.

I wonder if there are any stats on the recidivism rate for the guys that serve their time in the tent city? I bet it's lower than the national average. :)

That would be even greater reason to support that environment. I still fail to see where anyone has shown this to be cruel and unusual punishment. For once, I would like to see the cost of incarcerations decrease and even go to a positive.

Meh cruel and unusual is an opinion, it certainly seems unusual compared to all the other jails in the US.

Yes, but I hardly think that is what is meant by unusual in the statement cruel and unusual. Cruel is somewhat different for different people but we should be able to come to a consensus on the matter.

we had a guy named Harry Lee that prob not as tough as Aprio he was loved and reelected till he died. I'd like easier pot penalties but the sherrif doesn't make the law.

Yes, I support him. Illegal aliens aren't really nice to liberals, they hate US all, despite
well intentioned Anglo posters. Even the ones like sky dancer, they haven't a bloody clue why you dumbass gobachos support them and they don't care WHY, just as long s you losers DO. Why DO you support them SKY? They Hate you too, sweetpea. THAT is a fact. But they do like you pretending to support em', THEY EAT that shit up. Like YOU know about this issue, anyway.

Who is it you think I support? Criiminals? Undocumented immigrants?

I don't support this sheriff. His methods don't work.

SWsilver doesn't know my views on immigration. I don't remember mentioning anything about undocumented immigration at USMB.

I thought this thread was about the Sheriff.
